Hobart {help}

First of all let me say I'm not a welder I'm a mechanic That likes to weld and build things as a hobby. Now for my problem. I found a old hobart gas powered Mainliner. This is my 3rd machine to rebuild. The other 2 were lincolns. But I want to keep this one because i have never seen one like it. And it is the same age as me. It is a 1960 model. It set in a old barn far about 15 years and was not used much before that. Really it is like new. Ok what i need help with. The fine rheostat element is broken, part # AW608 Made by Mallory it is 150 watt and 50 ohm. Any help is Appreciated. 2 local welding shops basically told me to throw the machine away, that part could not be bought.

Model # GPB-261-S

Your big advantage is that you now know the 2 local shops that employ idiots, so you won't need to weed them out in the future.
Even better, you know both values of the rheostat you need, so you can easily hunt one down in the surplus electronics marketplace. You could possibly find the rheostat at Mahany Welding, Rochester's OLDEST Miller Dealer, call Ted or Dave at 585-271-0870, and if they have one it will be on the brown truck fast. If they don't have it, try places like eBay, Hosfeldt Electronics, and I have a hunch by the end of today there will be several other suppliers posted.

If you don't mind putting in Lincoln parts, here is a site that has them listed. They didn't list a price, but you could contact them. I would expect it to cost $75-100.

http://www.weldmart.com/LINCOLN%20RH...PAGE%20MST.htm

they also list rheostats for millers, just not the one you need. The web site says to contact them and they will try and find what you need.

Newark electronics list one here:

Go online to "digikey", most electronics supply outfits carry these..

It's made by "Ohmite" now, it's a standard Rheostat, if worse comes to worse, you can also substitute a 64 ohm 150 Watt Lincoln.

go down the page to the 50 ohm 225 watt rheostat, and you can buy it for $20.00. Higher wattage will be an advantage in heat dissipation.

Manual is still avialable thru Miller Electric manual department call 920-735-4197 Sara or Barb can assist. You must know the specification number to order.........cost is $15.00 usa funds.

Good luck and let us know if we can be of further assistance

And I always like to ask how you found the web site........

Be safe.......................Rock..........
