OT - Daughter's Welding Jacket

Finally got around to making a welding jacket that will fit my daughter. She's been after me to do more welding all winter, and now that the weather is warming up a bit, I think it's time we got back to it. So, I put this together. I actually bought a pattern for it. (Actually, I had my wife buy it. ) Spent about 3 hours so far. She had to have orange; she's a big Tony Stewart fan, just because the year she really started to appreciate driving around in circles, he won the championship. Anyway, she asked me if we could make it a set of coveralls, but I decided that an orange jumpsuit might look kinda funny. Mom's going to sew the button-holes, cuz my machine doesn't have the setting, or if it does, I don't know it. And the sleeves need to be hemmed. I may make an apron also to help protect her legs, but we'll see. The material is 97% cotton, 3% spandex. I don't think that at 3% the spandex poses much of a danger. No pockets, as I don't want to give sparks any extra places to get caught. The material is a little lighter than duck, but still fairly heavy, about like a medium denim. So, here it is almost finished.

Dude, that is a very cool thing to do for your little girl. She's gonna remember that forever.I made a summer style dress for my older sis when I was 15. lets see,, 52-15= older than dirt. Okay, it was a really long time ago but she still remembers and it still gets talked about.IMHO, the best work you'll do all year!!

The only problem with that jacket is that you need a shade 5 lens to look at it

Kidding aside, that's awsome. Sharing stuff like this builds great memories and provides great quality time with our kids.

PS. I'm jealous. I can't even sew buttons on correctly

I've sewn quite a few things over the years, such as Halloween costumes I'm too poor (cheap) to buy. I'm getting ready to sew a cover for my MM180. But everything up 'til this was my own design. Not many technical terms used in my instructions. So, it took a few calls to Mom to find out what does <insert sewing term here> mean??? How do I do <insert previously inserted sewing term here>??? I guess in the end, all that matters is that it gets done, and that I'm the only one who knows where the errors were made!

Oh, and I hate sewing on buttons. I have shirts that I don't wear because a button popped off, and I don't want to sew one on. I've actually offered to pay people to sew them on for me, and nobody else wants to either. I'm sure I could go to a tailor, but...

Right on, great looking jacket. I have done covers for my machines as I still have my upholstry machine from when I had a shop, comes in handy when one of the cars needs new covers. I am with you on the buttons, acually the whole clothing thing ... I will leave that to my daughter, she is much better at it than I am ... last count, 6 shirts that need one or more buttons hanging in the closet .

Great job! I haven't done any sewing in years, since my wife was a dressmaker and can make about anything. Give her a picture and she'll make a pattern. The last thing I sewed was in college, a pair of jeans, t-shirt and a baseball cap - for a one foot tall marionette.

I don't know how good this would be to have against bare skin, but if you want a flame retardent: " Into 3 pints water mix 1 cup ammonium chloride (available from drugstore or chemical suppy house) and 1/2 cup ammonium phosphate (available from a garden supply store). Soak cloth well and let dry. This preparation can be used for clothing, tents, awnings and other textiles."

Now you're going to have to figure out a logo to have embroidered on it. "Wee Weldorette" or something.

Oh no, Dave has turned into the Martha Stewart of welding. I can't wait until my son is old enough to learn to weld. Come to think of it, he's looking REALLY hard at the car too!!
Man, I'm gonna be in trouble...

Yes, and next week I'll show you how to make a beautiful casserole from a piece of C-channel and some stainless steel sheet.

Nice jacket, Dave

I have two just like it... one in a lovely shade of spring green and another is a sensuous deep purple... and of course... the slacks to match... after about 50 washings they are pretty comfortable...

I didn't sew them and they have snaps rather than buttons.... an option you might want to consider... easier to get out of in case of fire

I think a nice embroidered (sp) daughters name on the left chest panel would set it off...

as for the buttons... take them to the cleaners/laundry... they sew mine on for free if I have the shirts done... 1.25 a shirt... it's worth that go get the button sewed on !!!

BTW Dave... a sprinkling of brass filings will add that special flavor to your casserole that will have your guests begging for the recipe !!

later
John

Nothing wrong with cooking on an engine except that I didn't write the cookbook. That book is out of print now. People are wanting $80. and up for a copy of the original cookbook: http://www.amazon.com/Manifold-Desti.../dp/0375751408
