My turn to share

Good Afternoon-

I've been lurking (sort of) for a long time, and always learn a lot. Thanks for the help so far!

I thought I'd turn the tables and share a "yard art" creation from this Friday past. The idea was poached from an arts-n-crafts vendor in Colorado, but I've significantly altered the final product design. The flamingo is waiting for finish, which I think will be rattlecan clearcoat after one more cleaning. It'll be an indoor-residing yard art piece, so clean is important, durability not so much.

Thumbs up

That's certainly the best looking yard flamingo I have seen. What type of materials, processes did you use?

Changingground, looks like you used some pieces you would normally use on dec. hand rail. . . Yes? Cool little bird, ya gonna paint it pink? My brother lived in Littleton for a while, when he was doing his Lineman's apprenticeship. I drove down to help him move, and got to see the HUGE Bud factory. . . It was love at first sight! I didn't get to stop and "Take-a-Tour" (Code for drink as much as I could, for free) what a bummer Nice work on the flam, you should do your next one with it's wings spread like it's coming in for a landing. HAPPY WELDING!

Thanks All-

Nice to have the support. Many questions...

Nope- no pink.

Yes- It's composed of stock hand rail items, plus some fabrication of my own. The beak and head were assembled from a thin section of big rebar (1 1/2" dia- what number is that?) and a piece of 3/8th round and 1/2" round. Neck is 1/2" round bent up on my Northern Tools bender. Feet are arcs cut from ring-rolled hoops about 5" dia., then pointed on a grinding wheel.

The body of course is a stock spiral basket, wings and tail are stock item leaves (rt. facing and lt. facing for wings, smaller leaves overlapped for tail).

The idea about spread wings is a great one- I'll definitely try it on the next. For some reason I feel compelled by shore birds- something about the geometry of them, I think. I did a couple of non-species specific shore birds for a Christmas gift that I forgot to take pictures of which had different wing positions. The Flamingo came out much better.

As for welding process- it's all mig'ed (c25/75, .030 wire). I spent some time with a blue abrasive wheel/brush to clean things up, as well as emory paper on the tight spots. I've learned also to clean all of the parts prior to assembly. I'm not afraid to grind to get a piece the shape I like, but try to get as close to the correct shape as possible without a ton of grinding.

metals406- brewery tours are too dangerous for me- no self control ;-)

Thanks again

Flows Nice!

Very nice. The shaps flow and relate to each other well. Does not look choppy at all.

You should be proud.
