    Building a Bed

Since I have seen a couple of very cool head/foot board threads on here lately, this inspired me to share some pics of a bed that my son and I built for him. We finished it about a month and a half ago and it was quite a project. The wood portion is mountain cedar taken off the farm here in the Texas Hill Country. The metal is square tubing and square solid stock that has indentions along the edges. We used muratic acid to get a good rust coat on it before sealing it up. Anyway it is solid as a rock. We thought of building a couple more to sell but it sure is a whole bunch of work and unfortunately it gives me great pleasure to build something once but if more than one of anything needs to be built, it turns into a Job and I already have one of those.

Are you referring to the notches in the logs?

    MikeW,
We used several coats of Minwax water based polycrylic protective finish (clear satin). We have used this before and it has lasted 3 years on other projects with no problems. We do put about 5 coats on, Wife does that, I call her our paint department.

    Toolaholic,
If your referring to the wood notches, I have to spend a little time explaining how I did that. This took as much research as actually doing the notches. I built jigs and used a router. Just let me know if that is what your referring to and I will do my best to articulate it to you.

Oh and thanks for the kind words!!! It can get a little scary showing your stuff here.

That looks like hammered square stock he used. If so, it comes with the divots already in it.

I use a lot of it building household fixtures, except I use the 1/2 inch size usually.

You are correct, It is hammered square stock and the square tubing is available with that look as well.

very cool, I wish I had a SHOP that I could just hang out in and build things... with, well, you know... SPACE and STORAGE.. lol. That would be nice. Oh, and as long as I'm dreaming.. I'd like to win the lottery so I can hang out in the shop all day m-f and not have to go to work. Yes, I'll take that please. To Go.

Awesome bed. I've never seen the hammered stock like that before. Also never seen anyone RUST metal on purpose and then clearcoat it. haha, someone ask what color it is... just call it a Rust color. That rocks. Now I wanna burn my bed and turn it into a gokart so I can start over... lol

    HeloMech,

Your design was very clean and great looking. Different looks are OK and some folks wouldn't put a piece of log furniture in their garage much less their home. Buy some IV racks and build a stainless go-cart and keep the cool bed!!!
