"Smoothe" vs. "Not Smoothe" Steel Sheet/Plate??

    Hey guys-
I was just wondering something. When I buy flat strap, the metal is really coarse and not "smoothe". I am looking to make some brackets out of some 1/8 inch steel sheet steel. I was wondering how I can get the "smoothe" pieces? They will be finished pieces so I need them to look good. Is it cold vs. hot rolled material? I dont have a problem paying extra, just dont wanna look like a goof when I go and ask them for "smoothe 1/8 inch sheet steel.." LOL.
    THANKS A BUNCH!

    Kyle,
Usually when you aren't asked if you want hot or cold rolled, they give you the cheapest which is the hot rolled. Could also be that supplier doesnt' stock cold rolled strap. Cold rolled will definitely have a smoother finish.

    How you finshing them?

    Hey David-
Thanks a lot man! I appreciate it! So I should just ask for cold rolled then huh? The brackets will be powdercoated.

Actually Kyle, I don't think I've seen hot rolled plate at my supplier. Either way, insist on inspecting it before they cut it for you. Rain happens and all that.

    Kyle,

Where are you shopping? Both of the suppliers I use have hot-rolled stock that is very nicely finished, both flat bar and guage metals. Most of the thicker plate is cold-rolled, as David_r said, but I don't see any difference in the surface finish, except for the degree of mill scale.

I use Yuba City Scrap and Steel and All Metals in Oroville, FYI.

Kyle, if you're gonna powder coat it, finish should be a non-issue...it'll come out smooth.

Yeah, pretty much...they sand blast before coating. Here's a shot of a railing I did, then a closeup of the welds so you can see how it covers....powder coat hides a lot of imperfections.
