Metal working tools you can't live without ?

I've seen some great projects that you guys have put together ranging from the go-karts and trikes to yard-art. I'm wondering what tools you guys use most often to build these projects, aside from your welder of course ?

For the few basic projects I've put together I couldn't have done them without having a:

    1. Tape measure
    2. Framing square (12"x8")
    3. My Harbor Freight bandsaw (or some other effecient cutting tool)

Speaking of cutting metal, it amazes me to learn how some guys have actually built complete tube frame car chasis (using 1" sq tubing in 16ga) with only a hacksaw and a couple of files...I couldn't make two cuts without the bandsaw and I still can't fix the minor imperfections in the cuts using a file...

An absolute must is a 4 1/2 inch grinder. If you dont have one you are missing out. Raid the piggybank ASAP and speed down and get one and some wheels including 1/4.

O/A torch. I don't see how any repair, or heavy fab can be done without the torch, and a grinder. Aside from that, I use a whole lot of 1/8 spring pins as locating dowls for "multi layer drilling", and alignment fits.

Side cutters and a rock hammer...for chipping slag. I like "welpers", too.

A "Sharpie" pen is pretty high on my list.

    Question Welpers

Is "welpers" referring to quick clamps? I think ive heard it used that way before.

I second the 4 1/2 inch grinder. It can make ugly welds beautiful, make great cuts with thin discs, and create an even layer of dust on everything in the shop.

Nope, these are Welpers. They remove contact tips, gas nozzles, cut wire, etc.

I'm with Cary on the 4-1/2" grinder, but I love my Portaband. I'm with Rocky on the welper's too! I love them **** welpers.
Even when you strive for perfection the results are marginal.
So one must at least strive for perfection. And I still love the smell of 5P in the morning!

A scriber/marker, hacksaw, hand drill, few punches/ chisels, big hammer, grinder, a square, and a measuring tape. A lathe, a mill and a bandsaw is nice also.

My two most favorite and most used tools are a 3" abrasive cut-off tool and a mini 90 degree angle grinder (uses 3" rol-loc sanding/grinding discs). Both are air powered...can't seem to do any job without either tool.
