    Somebody please clue me in

Regarding angle grinders; I want to do some very aggressive grinding. I have three 4.5” grinders and they aren’t aggressive enough. Would I be better off getting a 7” or 9” grinder? And can someone recommend what wheels are the best bang for the buck?
    Thanks,
    John

John, at your age, I used a 9" grinder that ended up giving me elbow problems, for about 6 months. I would recommend a 5" grinder, and Hilti wheels...it's the wheels that make the difference and the 5" ers have plenty of power. But get a good one, like Milwaukee, Metabo, or Hilti. Bosch and so on.

Once you use premium abrasives you'll never go back. Norton Norzon are the best made IMO, they cost more but are worth every penny. They cut fast, last a long time and don't vibrate.

Rocky, I certainly appreciate you looking out for my poor elbows! But seriously, that is a big factor to consider. I may be only 53 but I feel 93 a lot of the time, arthritis is setin in all my joints and gets worse each year, but I refuse to stop welding, it’s too much fun! It does take me about 3or4 time longer to complete a project than it use to.

JT, thank for the tip on the wheels from Norton, I’m ordering some today. gonna try some hilti too.

    Thanks guys,
    John

Yeah, John nortons are good, too and maybe a little cheaper, I dunno. Just a note on the wheels: they have wheels for all sorts of different metals, and I have found there is a good reason for it. The wheels for steel don't do stainless well, and so forth, and there is a zirconium wheel which was touted to be the greatest, but I found the general purpose wheels cut even better, than the zircs. So pick and choose carefully and the grinding will go smooth. There are wheels/brands tha cut good at first, then glaze over half way down and give you fits...both norton and hilti cut right up to the nut. As always, the right tool for the job, is my motto (or one of my many mottos )

If it is a matter of power in your grinders Milwaukee has their Super Magnum line that has 4 1/2" grinders with a 12 amp motor. I have a really hard time slowing mine down.
