    New Hobart 180 problem

    Hello,
I'm a novice at welding and am having problems with my new Hobart 180. I have accidentally touched the gun tip to the metal and managed to weld the tip closed. I took the tip off, and tried to feed the wire through, but the spool won't move. The fan is on but nothing is moving. I think the problem could be that the metal part at the end of the gun hose is supposed to touch the wheel inside the body of the drive assembly and it is not. But, I can't get it to move any closer.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Lee, first, the "metal" part of the gun next to the drive roll is your gun liner and it should not be touching the drive roll, should be close, but not touching. After you took the tip off, did you move any of the controls? What position is the voltage knob in, 1, 2, 3, or 4? When you press the trigger on the gun, do you hear a clicking sound coming from the welder? Just trying to get a little more info.

Oh good, I'm glad we didn't force it! No, it didn't make a clicking noise.

It was working fine (and clicking) before I melted metal on the tip, though.

Lee, call 1-800-332-3281, that will get you in touch with either Steve or Keith, they can ask you a few more questions and get you up and running. There is a motor protection circuit in this welder that will allow the fan to run to cool down the unit until the circuit resets itself, but that shouldn't be the cause for your problem.
