HI BARTH..........LET'S TALK ABOUT WELDING RODS SHALL WE. WHEN YOU BUY THE ROD OF YOUR CHOICE IF YOU NOTICE ON THE LABEL SOME RODS SAY DCEP (DC+) AND SOME SAY DCEN (DC-) AND SOME SAY DCEP/DCEN...........THEY'RE TELLING YOU THE POLARITY THE ROD WILL RUN IN FOR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE. THIS WILL ALSO EQUATE TO WELDING WIRE'S ETC...........OPTIMUM........ BEING THE KEY HERE FOR PENETRATION AND STRENGTH........................IF YOU NEED A QUOTE FROM A WELDING MANUAL I CAN PROVIDE I JUST THOUGHT MAYBE THIS WOULD EXPLAIN IT..............................ROCK

Download one of these owners manuals for type of welder you have. They have some great information and drawings on how POLARITY affects welds.
