Hi, I tryed my brand new Victor Fire Power torch set today. Just got new tanks today and did a leak test. Then fired up the # 0 cutting tip. About every second I would get a POP or SNAP out of the tip I tryed a few different combinations of more or less oxy or acyetylene made no difference. I would get a good flame just alot of poping. Can somebody please give me a few ideas.Like I said everthing is brand new.
Chech that all fittings are snug and that the tip is seated correctly.
Now to light the torch.
acet =5 ox =5
ox off acet just on light torch. You should get a yellow flame and black smoke but flame should be "attached" to the tip. open acet the flame should grow and may separate from the tip if it does back off until it re attaches now open oxigen until you get a neutral flame. See the info that came with the torch for a pix of a neutral flame. The torch should now burn clean without pops.
If you are using a cutting head up the oxigen to 20 -25 for starters. You may need more for heavy cuts.
Open the body oxigen valve leave the forward preheat ox valve closed light on acet as before. Open the preheat oxigen for neutral flame depress the lever for the cut lance. The preheat flame should not change . If it does open the body oxigen valve more, reset neutral flame then re test lance .
pre heat until sparks start then activate lance . you should get a cut start in 3-5 seconds.
to weld heat with neutral flame until parent metal melts and flows , add filler and go. The torch angle should be such that the tip is out of the hot area or you may overheat the tip and get popping .
if you can not get the above results get someone experienced to check your set up out . You could damage your tip if there is a problem left uncorrected.
It seems complicated but it is not it just takes practice. Remember to turn the bottle valves off when not using your new toy.
You should read pnj's thread he is also just starting with a torch. Terry
