Hh 175

Hi, been reading the board for quite some time and have learned alot. I am new to welding, but look forward to learning. I mostly work on cars and can really used the welder to fabricate many pieces. Based on input from the board I purchased a HH175. I hope it fit my needs. I look forward to using it.

The Handler 175 is a nice little machine and will serve you well.

Hey, I'm looking into buying a HH 175. I want a welder that is good for body work and for welding on frames. Is the HH 175 a wise choice?

PS I will be using gas.

Welcome aboard. the HH175 will do bodywork. What type of framework are you wanting to do?

Um, stuff like c notches and installing air bag suspention. Engine mounts also.

The material in car & truck frames is generally thin enough that the HH175 should be more than capable. The HH135 would be borderline to undersized for this application.

OK cool. I have a few other questions too. In the specs, it says it is a 230v welder. I thought you could only have 110, and 220 plugs installed. What's up with that? Does this thing just plug into a 220?

Okay, this is a common misunderstanding, so don't feel bad.

There are two "principle" voltages available within the residential community. Power companies provide 115VAC and 230VAC, +/- at a tolerance of about 10%. My understanding is that the typical voltage at your recepticle must be between 110 and 120 volts, and your high-voltage is double that, so between 220 and 240volts. This varies partly due to the distance from the local transformer.

Think of it this way.... a water hose.

Voltage is the force behind the flow of water, or water pressure.
Current is the speed of the water, or water flow.
Wire size is like the size of your water lines. Too small a line increases pressure, causing an increase in the flowrate.

Basically, the higher the voltage, the lower the amperage required to perform the same amount of work.

At 240V for example, your HH175 might draw 15A, the rated current at 230V is 17A, but at 220V the unit would draw 20A.
