    HH140 w/ .023 wire

I have a question for someone that may know more than me. The manual of the HH140 states to set the tension between 2 - 3 to start, remove cone and spool wire onto a piece of wood it should not slip and roll the wire. I have had to set the tension to 4 and it still slips using .023 if I set it tighter I had it birdnest. I cleaned that up and reset the tension to just above 4. It welds ok so I am leaving it there unless told otherwise. Any idea's.

Did you change wire feed wheel to .023?... Or can you?

My HH 140 came with a wire feed wheel that is only for .030-.035 wire... (yes the other side is marked same and there is no v grove other than for .030-.035)

Yes I ordered the .023 drive wheel and installed that today. That is why I was asking.

The lower drive wheel does not have an adjustment and by the way I am using the 4" spool

How tight is your spool tension? That 4 inch spool is like a little stubby wrench to your drive rooler. Make the spool tension just enough to prevent it continuing to turn when you release the trigger. Any tighter just makes the drive work harder. Also, how is your liner; is it old, dirty, or kinked? That will increase drag, however you did not say you had a problem until you switched to .023 wire.

The welder is brand new out of the box and the spool tension was set by the rep who put the unit together from hHobart at the demo

I spoke to customer support at Hobart and here is what was said. With the drive wheel released and the top latch lifted you should be able to hold the wire between your thumb and finger and pull the wire out (with cable straightened). I did this when I was on the phone with them. I have to kink the end of the wire to grip the wire it to be able to pull the wire. To much pressure in the liner???

Hobart said they would replace the liner since the welder is just out of the box.

All I can say is they are top notch when it comes to customer care.

I find the Hobart tips extra tight.. maybe it's just me.. but sometimes it is frustrating when the wire gets stuck in the tip (due to whatever) I just use my chinese tips. The hole is juuust a little bigger.
