    Joe,
I just weave it very little just a tad with the rod about 90 degrees with the metal I am welding. The picture shows a tad of a weave up hill vertal weld using 1/8" 7018 at about 125 amps DC+.. Yes there is some slag I did not remove..

Urch, I've heard good things re the Atom Arc Acclaim rods; my LWS had two 10lb cans, 3/32 and 1/8 that someone ordered and then backed out. He (the proprieter) didn't think much of them and I got both for $29. I'm waiting for a big project before I pop the tops. The Lincoln Excaliber 7018 is a good stick unless you have to restrike, the end is recessed in the coating and it fingernailed to get to it. Did a job for work and charged a can to them and was glad it wasn't my money.

Your thoughts on the ESAB A/A sticks?

I got mine when they were giving a pound of the ESAB rods free as samples. Then you go to thier site give a evaluation and they send you a free pair of safety glasses. I gave them a good report. Strike/re-strike was great, no finger nailing, had a nice aggressive bite to it not too buttery/fluid. I tried them on A/C and DC+ and like most rods they are better on DC+..
Excalibur are nice rods what I do is before re-strike drag the tip on the concrete floor and if your working out in the field take a brick with you, it makes life more easier.
I like Blue shield 7018 rods but they have a soft arc not a very aggressive bite but, they handle well..

The Excaliber was great for flat welding on heavier stuff where I could run a decent amount of heat, about 115 amps for 1/8" and let it flow out. Fillets looked like one piece flowed into another with practically no ripples, made you look like a pro . I was usually burning the whole stick to a nub. I could get them to restrike (maybe) if I rubbed the coating on the metal and got the arc to start through the iron in the coating but it's not like actually starting on the electrode (OCV was about 75 volts). The coating had the most even burnoff I've ever seen, looked impressive but shrouded the electrode making it hard to get to. For tacks it was non-ideal and the Linc 7018AC sold at big box stores, you know the ones in a cardboard box claiming to be lo-hy with ripped cellophane covering restruck easier, then I laid into it with the Excals. It wasn't very aggressive and buttwelds had to be beveled as it didn't pen much. I hear the AtomArc Acclaim has more dig and sticks better for overhead work with a faster freeze. I might see if my LWS has a sample tube...I don't want to open a sealed can to try a few sticks.

Overhead the Excaliber puddle wasn't optimum....the welds looked okay but it was sorta fluid, definitely not a fast-freeze. Your weld looks like it has a quicker freeze, consistent with some postings on this forum. Looks nice BTW!

No 7018 rod is "fast freeze". xx10, xx11 are fast freeze rods.
7018 rod is classified as fill freeze, low hydrogen rod.
