Hobart Titan 8D generator/welder needs excitement every time

My Hobart Titan 8D with Perkind 3.09 requires flashing every time I run it. Iunderstand from other posts that the generator should self excite via the engine alternator. what controls this as I cant find any particular add in to the wiring towards the brushes

    any thoughts please

    Flashing.

There is no onboard flashing system with this unit but nothing says you can't add one. However check that your brushes have not worn down below 1/4 " . If they have get some new ones. Try cleaning up the slip rings with 00 flint or commutator stone with the engine at idle and mind your fingers. Also when you start be sure to unplug any appliance from the receptacles until the voltage builds up.
    Good luck

Thumbs up Wiring diagram shows a Rectifier - Excitation

    Thanks OF
The wiring diagram shows a Rectifier-Excitation as a part CR1.
we have tested this part and it seems ok

You are saying no on board flashing in my unit - is that still the case do you think??
I will try to replace the part (cheap I think)

This is truly a great site

    excitatiion

Yes CR1 is a 2 diode rectifier that picks up the 2 80v coils output and feeds it to the slip rings On start up the generator depends on residual magnitism like in a permanent magnet to allow a magnetic field to build up to build up the voltage. What the flashing does a external power source ( battery) is used to create a magnetic field allowing the build up of voltage. This generator has no connection to the battery. I doubt changing the rectifier will solve the problem. Go back and check brushes and clean up the slip rings for a start. Be sure the wiring connections are clean and tight in the CR1, R1 circuit.

    Thanks OF

I wil get to the brushes and police the slip rings. They are tight to access. I imagine that the brush holders could come out.
Just seen the images of the new thread on a Jeep Hobart welder. very nice eh
