    frozen micrometer barrel

ive been working on this thing for months now, not steady of course and i find it more than nice to be on earth time.

id soaked it for weeks in kerosene then heated the kerosene up to two hundred and ended up breaking the adjustment tool. today i cut some tube and put a copper insert in it to clamp it in a vice and finally put the copper in a collet to hold it and that finally got it.

as you can see it was pretty messy in there. i never did try kroil on it as i said i would entirely because i never bought any.

i guess all in all for the most part having a tool that is not zero'd is of little meaning as long as this is known so it kinda was a waste of time.

Not really it can still be used. If you mic a part then use that measurement to make another part it will be the same. Say you have a .499 bolt and need to turn another one if it reads .499 by the same mic you are fine. Thats a good brand of mic...Bob

    Mike....

You could use it for a small 'C' clamp......

I probably shouldn't put a smiley face there as some buffons treat micrometers as c clamps......

    I'm back by the way.....

Have an old (but "like new") Starrett that locked up on me. My son finally freed it up, but it wasn't disassembled to see what the real damage is. For now it's a desk toy. What's a few thousands among old friends, eh?

Years ago a friend had a Starrett dial caliper he was rightly proud of. Then one day his mom went looking for a wrench....

The family relationship survived but the caliper was done.

Interestingly, I still have one of my dad's micrometers, a Browne & Sharpe just like the one 'Clamp' in your picture but mine's intact. it's a tenths reading mike. I cringed when I saw that......

In the beginning, the Earth was without form, and void.
When one picks up some wood or metal or stone and shapes it into something usefull
... I beleive that it has to be a deliberate effort to disavow a creator.

As you work these, and join them, you feel the force and the will of He
who formed and shaped the very resorces that you now add your will and force to.
Further one surely can know when your will and force is not aligned with His.
