    What pipe for Gate Hinge

I have made a simple Garden Gate for a lady who wanted me to make it with an implement wheel, and some old picket tops. It will be mounted onto these 5/8" pintle screws into a cedar Post. I have done these in the past, using iron pipe welded to the gate, but my visit to the hardware store came up short on pipe that would accommodate the 5/8" pin. what size pipe am I looking for?

This is the gate, to this point...(her design...she is delighted with it)

You are better off making your own. Weld 3/4" rod to lag bolts, use 3/4" pipe on the gates.

    1" rod/pipe will also work.

It's possible, have to measure to be sure, that 3/4" schedule 80 pipe will fit those 5/8" pins.

Carefully evaluate, and if necessary, research on your own any suggestions or advice you might pick up here, especially those from my posts, as I obviously haven't the skill and experience exhibited by some of the more illustrious and more successful members of this forum. You can always use the female hinge part for a chain-link gate, by cutting off the mounting part and welding the hinge loop to the gate. I've done that on occasion where they didn't want the extra mounting stuff showing.
They also have bolt on hinge halves for 1.25 and 1.5" sq.tubing in centered and offset if that would work for you.

Also, my book from Ram Steel shows that 1/2" SH40 pipe has an ID of .622", if you could punch that out with a 5/8" drill that could work. They'd need to be space out a bit to allow clearance for those lags that you have pictured.

You could also use a 'batwing' hinge tab.

Her hooks...she already has the Pintle "L's", and wants to use them.

I went with Batwings...but only because 5/8" pipe was not to be found in my little town....I was concerned about their strength (probably are very strong , as -is), so the guy at the LWS suggested doubling them up, which I thought was a splendid idea!

UNTIL... ...after I welded them on, it occurred to me that the gate would not swing on the Pintle "L" Bolt, because those bottom "wings" would trap the bolt..... (I found that under the "Too Late Smart" files in my faded memory banks...
So I have trimmed the wings of my computer image, and will go out and do this tomorrow...(viewed from bottom)

You won't be able to screw the lag bolts into the post with the gudgeons (batwings) already welded to the gate, or rather, not reliably. Look in the king metals catalog for the gudeons that actually go with your lag pintles, they make a clamp on one that is for those, you just need to mimic it.
