    EZ-TiG Owners....Show me please !!

Ok guys and gals, Im trying to convince myself that a EZ-tig is enough machine for what I want to do. In that effort, would all you EZ-TiG owners please post some examples / pics of the work you are doing specifically with the Hobart Tig units. Full projects are NOT needed...just, show me the welds and the materials. However, feel free to post away if you want to share.

Im really on the fence about whether or not the EZ-tig is enough machine for me and what Im doing. I would go into great detail, but I signed a legal confidentiality agreement to not release any info on this. About all I can say is , 4130...aluminum...stainless...and A500/A36 is what Ill be working on. The thickness of the material will be up to 1/4 inch (pushing it......1/8 and 3/16 will be average). I wish I could say more...REALLY. Someday, I hope Ill get to spill the beans over this to everyone.

I don't own one but a 150 amp machine should weld those alloys with the proper process. You'd be better off to step up a little in machine capacity though. Duty cycle will limit you more than output IMHO.

Thats kinda what I was thinking as I read the specs. The young men I am trying to help are all working on their Doctoral thesis', this project is to be the end result of their study. As they are students, none of them have any money to afford the services of a much more qualified welder. Im the only one person they know who offered any assistance in putting this "project" together.
The whole reason for the secrecy is to protect the research they have done. I never really knew this, but just as there is industrial espionage, there is also a high amount of theft of ideas going on out there. Especially in the competitive environment found in graduate and post graduate programs. I have been told though, that once the work is turned in for assessment for final grading...I will be able to spill the beans about what these 3 guys are doing. For now.....I just gotta get the equipment I need together so I can start putting all the parts together for them.

As for the Tig I need..... I think its gonna come down to a larger machine, if not for any reason but the duty cycle.

YES !! I knew the people on this forum were the best!! JB WELD, your a godsend.... thank you guys!!! Wait till I tell all the folks in the Engineering Dept at the college....The experts at Hobarts forum have the answers!! Its JB WELD !! Wow....seriously, I cant thank you enough, any idea how much of that is needed for an 8 inch thin walled tube-joint? Its only going to be used for a low powered vibratory pellet delivery system....but hey.....I TRUST you!!

you guys are the bestest !!!

Back to the issue at hand...

Ok, the circus is packing up their tents, and the ringmaster has retired the clowns, back to business.

As I stated earlier.... Im trying to decide if a EZ tig is enough welder for a large project that I have coming up. Below is a parts list that I just got today of a few of the pieces that I need to join.

8 inch .080 aluminum tubing / I think vacuum lines? ITS AN EXHAUST!!
a gosh awful lot of 1" SS tubing...looks like a boat rail to me (not)
multiple carbon steel legs with adjustable / leveling feet. 4" sq tube x 3/16
16 gauge SS sheet made into a lot of component boxes
    3/32 AL sheet...see above
tons of brackets out of carbon and SS
looking at the plans.... I see a holding tank for something....so, looks like a SS or Al pressure vessel that may be in the works. If so, I might try to get them to buy it made instead of fabbing it. If not...it looks like its 52" in dia. x 64 inches tall....coned on the top and bottom. Ill probably mig those seams. but there are several flange fittings that will need tig....looks like sch. 40 SS or Al.
there are a crap-ton of electrical raceways that need to be fabbed...all tig work.
a few fan shrouds that are probably carbon steel, probably 18/16 gauge
Im seeing 6 custom eletric motor mounts. 3/16 carbon Im guessing.

OK.....hows that for some idea of what I need to be Tig' ing?

While I cant talk about what this all makes....theres an idea of what I need to be welding on.

    ANY REAL INPUT??

    Thanks for playing!!

52"X64" pressure vessel? Good luck! Watch those guys close around that when it's energized.

8"X.080" aluminum tubing is usually irrigation pipe for agriculture. We used a lot of it at Boeing on the Delta II rocket for feed line housing. The parent material has more defects in it than the welds were allowed.

If it is indeed the same thing that we used have it leak checked before you depend on it too much for pressure or vacuum.

The materials that you describe all sound like the little 150amp machine could handle. I just like to have some reserve capacity so I will always suggest that you get the biggest machine that you can afford. 200amps will do this job and probably even the next jobs as well. I don't recall needing more than 200 amps for anything that wasn't robotic or production line welding.

If you have three phase power available in your lab, you can usually find commercial machines being sold by companies that go out of business or have upgraded their equipment. These go for a very reasonable price.

    Good luck with your project.

Good point - labs often have 3 phase power feeds and they can't hardly give away the 3 phase machines since the market is so small.

Yeah, those machines have been recalled because they are so crappy. I am the official shipping point receiver of all recalled goods and you should go ahead and send those to me immediately for destruction. You will receive a Walmart gift card for $20 for your inconvenience.
