    Gas cylinder size upgrade

Curious, do most LWS let you upgrade the size of your cylinder when it comes time for an exchange ? Or do they let you pay the difference between the two ?

I have a 120 and wanted to get something bigger.

It will entirely depend on the local LWS and state laws concerning cylinder size.

Generally depends on whether you own the bottle or are leasing it.

In the case of a lease, most gas suppliers will let you swap for a larger bottle. Don't know about your area, but here in VA, the lease on say a 125 is the same (about 55/yr) as the lease on a 330.

For owner bottles, it is stictly a policy of the LWS. Problem here is that most of the larger bottles are not "owner bottles" and carry a stamp of the owning gas supplier.

The all powerful and political Department of Homeland Security has gotten involved in cylinder purchase/leasing. It's their take that a large bottle may be use as a weapon I guess.

I know that an old large O2 cylinder makes a dandy bowling ball cannon with the top cut off and a tripod added.

A small hole near the bottom for cannon fuse and some black powder with a plastic bag wadding and you have a bowling ball recycler.

More fun that a potato gun and louder too.

    Not for urban areas however.

I have never had homeland security effect any cylinder I have purchased.
I own T's(330),K's(300)S's(150) and on down.

My expirience with upgrades of a customer owned cylinder has always been regulated by company guidelines and store policy.

Better do some snooping around. The Department of Homeland Security is very involved in compressed gas cylinder storage and transportation.

Per chance did you vote for Virg Benero?

All I know is I own and exchange cylinders S size and up and the gas supplier has never questioned my ownership nor has the government.
If I had a 30,000 gallon propane tank at my shop I can believe there would be some interest but beyond that I'm not worried about guys in suits and dark glasses.

Your key words. Own and exchange. Possession is 9/10ths of the law, for now. I'm the same. I own many sizes of bottles and exchange many sizes. I'm careful about what gets exchanged (at the LWS) and what I have filled (owned bottles).

My reference is to newly purchased bottles, not to existing bottles.

In as much as I have no need to acquire new bottles, I can't say what the regs are on larger than 40cuft bottles in this state.

Not that I question your vendors but I stopped at Airgas and they will sell me an S size argon/CO2 paying cash and they asked no name so I am guessing that Homeland Security is gonna have a hard time finding me so I go back to policy is set by company guidelines and store policy.

That's interesting because I too deal with Airgas but on the east side of the state and they are adamant about not selling outright, anything over 40 CuFt, but then I have an account and pay with a company check.

I usually fill my (owned) bottles at AirGas in Tolero at the pump station.

I own my bottles, and my LWS has no problem with upgrading or downgrading any of them per my request. They're nice guys, and the store is a family owned one.

The franchises we have here are much less flexible and friendly, so they don't get my money.
