    Hey bob,
Your query indicates you want to use the SMAW(stick) process.

Welding cast iron can, at times, be a nightmare. I see most weldors use Ni99 or Ni55 with a pre-heat, post-heat, & controlled cooling with a blanket or sand. The resultant repair with stick can vary from success to more damage with additional cracking. All the cast iron repairs I do, I use the "Cold Welding Cast Iron With MIG" process with 100% success.

Welding mild steel with stick can be done quite easily with 6010/11, 6013, 7018, or 7024 as the most common. Your choice would vary from flat welding to vertical or overhead. For flat, 6013 & 7024 are the easiest. For all position, 6010-11/7018.

I'm sure others will chime in.

Easiest of the normal sticks is 7014.. Nice looking welds and the slag just falls off.

Actually, Messer 80T AC+ is the best rod, if you can find it.

    cast/steel welding...

I was asking on behalf of a friend. I have welded cast/steel with my Hobart mig and had great success. He wanted to 'make sure' shat he did would hold. He filled a hole in on the cast piece with his mig. His thinking was to groove the surface a bit and use a rod compatible to both. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

for welding Cast Iron TO mild steel high nickel content fiiller is preferred. I can't think of the electrode number for nickel rod right now, but stainless filler works as well.

308 or 309 work just fine.

That being said welding cast iron with anything is a bear, wants to crack instantly, I prefer to braze them and eliminate all the headaches.

You can weld it with mild steel, but the weld is highly likely to crack, Nickel filler helps lower that risk.
    In case of welding emergency
    use a bolt
