    Grand Cherokee bumper build

this is what it should look like:

its being made out of a combination of 3/16" rectangular tube, 1/4" plate, and 1/8" plate...

    heres how i started:

naked without the front grille/fascia i cut the tow point slots bigger to accept a 4" tall bracket:

next i made sandwich plates for the bottoms of the brackets:

brackets with nuts and gussets tacked:

    front and drivers side mocked/tacked:

    just another view (upside down):

gussets added to each side for some more contact area/support:

somewhat decent welds im really liking my new hobart 210:

i was nervous about welding the 3/4" shackle mounts to the 3/16" tubing but i did some research ended up cranking up the voltage and used .035 wire and a decent size weld and im really happy with the way they turned out...

pics are kind of crappy i need to play with my camera a bit:

then i started the angled pieces for the bottom:

im open to all thoughts and opinons...im really new at this, this is my second welder and it was a huge jump from my little craftsman to this hobart....

    Nice!

Is that sketchup you are using? I'm an AutoCAD operator at work but have been looking for something for home to use. How do you like sketchup?

I'm going to download and fool with Sketchup this week. You got the free version right?

Tow points that but weld to the surface like that always make me a bit nervous. I would be a lot more comfortable with a design where the tab goes through the tube so you can weld the front and the back. It looks like if you would have done that the tab could even be welded to the support piece going to the frame tie in.

What you have will probably be fine, but if a clevis tab ever came off….

I do like the way it matches with the grill and fenders though.

yea i hear what your saying, alot of other guys have said it on other forums, in reality though the mount is only as strong as the 3/16" AND i wont be using it for anything crazy i dont plan on getting YANKED out of a ditch or something...

i was going to buy 1" tabs that go through the bumper but i didnt feel comfortable welding 3/4 let alone 1"....

Haha, 75 lbs is fine - most winches weigh 90+! I love the looks of that bumper! I'm getting the 210 in a couple months here, and I'm really excited.

Simple design but it looks fantastic! I would look at doing some more strengthening to the frame brackets. Laterally I think they are too weak and any pulling off center is going to deform them. If you could box that in it would be considerably stronger.

Not to beat a dead horse but I was trying to get at that point in post #10. If clevis points were fabricated differently they could be bolted to the frame making the pumper mount stiffer and the tow points safer at the same time.

It looks like this is possible without changing the shape of the bumper, which is very nice.
