The reason you hate gloves is because you're buying crap. Buy a good set of gloves. TIG gloves are too thin, but you can get gloves that are just as comfortable.

I wear the Miller brand MIG-style gloves. If you're doing some heavy duty stuff, get the Stick-style. These and Tillman brand gloves are the best I've ever used.

Yes, they won't last as long as those tough, cheap pieces of suede, but you won't care. Even the Miller "Stick" style is flexible, they are just a little thicker than the "MIG" style which I prefer. It will also depend on which size fits you best.

For me the large size in the "MIG" fits, well, like a glove. The Stick in the same size has more padding, which makes the glove fit more tightly, instead of making the glove a little bigger to compensate for the padding. At least, that's how it feels.

The "feel" will be different for everyone, though.

And, like I said, Tillman gloves are also top-of-the-line, and I've several pair of those as well.

a1racer, I answered your post about your welding cart with a little advice about grinding safety and now I see you like to weld bare handed! I urge you to find a pair of gloves and wear them when welding and handling steel. You'll be glad you did. Funny thing about really hot steel is how it feels kind of cold for the first second or so. Not to mention sharp edges.

And the UV burns. And the skin cancer.

Maybe I'm weird (ok, no maybe), but a good pair of welding gloves that fits well is about the most comfortable winder glove I have ever worn, including on a motorcycle (and cheaper mthan the snowmobile gloves I wear when it is too wet for the welding gloves)

I said I liked it not though it was a good idea. That is why I was asking about a new set. And I only do some really light welding about every other mounth. And I wear them but have a hard time moving smothly with them so I was asking if it was ok to wear the tig units but I guess I will look in to some millers or some tillmans

I just talked about this on another forum about myself. I hate gloves, all gloves no matter what I am doing. My hands are solid callouses because I don't care what I am doing, I never wear gloves.

I have been a blacksmith for about 15 years and never wear gloves. Hot stuff is no longer as hot, take a lot longer to burn through the callouses. Not that is is a smart thing or that I advocate it, but some people just plain hate gloves.

It does not matter if I am welding, cutting, forging, carrying bricks or sweeping the floor, I do it bare handed.

I think that hearing people being called sissies for wearing gloves as a kid started me out this way but I am stuck.

I have bought many pairs of gloves and remember them AFTER I do something that requires them.

Some of us are just nuts I guess.

    I'll second this motion.

Another mention, around here we can tell what shops aren't union because they won't wear gloves or safety glasses. I'm picky about my gloves and try them on before purchase, currently I'm on the BSX Glove Kick they are pretty good.

If you can stand the heat, at least wear some TIG gloves to avoid the UV. Anything is better than nothing.
