    broken exaust manifold

I have to weld a tab back on to my exhaust manifold. What rods should I use I have a DC machine. Also I don't have O/A to preheat it with would a propane torch work?

    Mega,
Being in the cast iron repair biz and especially manifolds , I would
put the arc weld on the shelf and weld it with O/A with cast iron rod and
proper flux. I see that you don't have an O/A set , now would be the
time to invest , that way you can weld it and expect it to be a permanent
    repair.

I repair and reserect exhaust manifolds , I have some pictures
posted , you might like to see why I say to do it with O/A .
Here is a link to some repair . Take the tour , there are about 300
pictures of some odd repair .

Your probably right but another manifold would be cheaper its just a small tab that doesn't and doesn't need to be the strongest weld in the wold. A I have is the stick welder so that what i got to use so any ideas on what rod to use?

First choice Ni 55, second choice 7018. Sweet George! I need more cast options. Thanks for the site. Went and visited your pics George. I need a heating place. I also wanted to ask you how to keep the backs gears from rattling on your LeBlonde Lathe as we have one just like it.

You can use a Nickel 55 or a Nickel 99. A 309 Stainless rod will also work alot of times. I've never had much luck welding manifolds with any other rods.

What about Lincoln's Ferroweld? Did you ever try those rods?

When welding cast iron , your first choice of weld should be O/A and
cast iron rod, second choice should be brazing , and a distant last
choice would be anything invoving an arc .

    Mr Meck,
I have the Leblonde in and temp wired enough to make it run ,
but have not done any jobs on it yet. The little time it was running
it seems to me it did make quite a lot of noise , I'll try it again and
see how much noise. This lathe is 30 inch swing , I have an old
Flather 26 inch in the main shop ,also a 20" american tool works,
    and a 14" lodge and shipley .
Send me an email with a phone # and I'll call you .

I welded a crack in one using O/A for preheat, then ground out the crack. First pass with an old Eutectic rod I had lying around and second pass was E308. Buried it in hot sand after peening with a needle gun. I'm no expert, but it worked!

Cold Roll 99 has been the best rod i've seen used for cast.A little pricey though .

Cronatron Certanium 889 get my vote...TIG or stick, never had a failure. It, too, is pricey.
