I got to wondering if the price of gas today was really any different than past years when compared to the rising prices of other major goods. I particularly wondered about what a gallon of gas at todays' national average of $3.24 represented as a percent (small as it would be) of average new car price for 2008...which is $22,154 (to date).
I then compared that to the year 2000, using 2000 dollar amounts (not adjusted for inflation) of $1.66 per gallon gas, and average new car price of $7,651.
If these figures re correct (I got them off the web).
Gas today = .0001462 the average new car price (told you the percentage was small)
Gas in 2000 = .0002169 of average car price.![]()
