Welding a pipe onto my maul head

I found a wood chopping maul head but now can't find a replacement hickory handle at any of my town's hardware stores. They have plenty of handles, just none come close to fitting my maul hole. Instead I'm thinking of welding a 1" pipe to it as a handle instead. Has anybody done this? Will 1" pipe stand up to the heavy wood chopping chores? Will it vibrate like crazy?

Where are you in Virginia? I'm near Richmond. I have a few small hickory trees in the yard, and you can have one if you need it.

If things are close but just a little beyond where your replacement handles can fit by being wedged, just get a couple of wedges and some poly glue and build it up. It really seems to stick well and fills gaps so that you don't get so much loosening from moisture changes throughout the year.

    Thanks for the offer!

Unfortunately the handles I have seen aren't even close.

As long as your thinking about a 1" pipe, how about a 1" solid steel rod. It will be bullet proof that way and if you want a thicker handle just weld the pipe to that

I thought of solid since I have a lot of thick rebar, but I think it might add more weight than desired.

Yes, it is gonna vibrate like crazy. I used a sledge that someone did that to and it was the pits. I wouldn't do it. Have you looked online for them? Try these guys. Sometimes they have handles no one else has. www.bontool.com

Can you adapt a pick handle? Is an "axe eye" maul?

Ace Hardware sells a lot of different mauls. I note that many have a part number for a replacement handle. Some of those list the eye dimensions.

We got a guy at a local flea market that sells homemade wood handles. Maybe there is someone in your area that does that.

Or you could just cough up the $20 and buy a new one with a fiberglass handle.

Heck yeah I've done it! I'm a po' kuntree boy! We wrapped duct tape around the handle at first but the tape got wet (Pacific NW, what can I do?) and gradually worked it's way off. So next we used a pipe insulation that was adhesive on the inside. Worked like a charm from then on. Dunno where the pipe insulation came from, didn't really care at the time. Sucker lasted forever.

I have one like this, have had it for 10 years and can't tear it up. It's all steel.

I've used plenty of splitting mauls with pipe handles, whether homemade or store bought and never looked back at a wooden one. Splitting pine knots all day a wood handle WILL break

The Monster Mauls were great, they would split anything. I did have a pipe handle break off one, didn't have a welder back then. Ha, I probably still have it somewhere, I might have to try to fix it!

But I do remember days of sore shoulders after splitting wood all weekend. I think the vibration is a lot worse with the metal handles and I paid for it. But, wow, they DO split wood!!

Why does everything have to be a compromise

    Maul Handle

Don't weld a pipe or a solid bar to it as a handle (although the pipe would be the better choice b/c it cuts down on vibrations. But both will definitely vibe bad). Just look harder for a wood handle for it. Will work out better in the long run.
