    New Security door

    Hi Folks,
Just like to share my first project, a secure door for the downstairs so that the wife can let the air flow through at night.
I can't seem to get the picture into the "attach file" although by using 'browse' it finds the file. Any advice?

thanks for the feedback but I don't see an 'open' anywhere. Where should I look?

Now where did that come from?

I used 1.25" box with .083 wall and welded with my new MM175 loaded with .030 wire and shielded with CO2. The design is a modified Chinese/Hawain garden gate.
    Thanks for asking.

lets see if I can get this to work: hopefully it will show how I used wire to align the tubes for tacking in place.

Well the original plan was to prep with primer and coat with black enamel but then I read the discussion on using phosphoric acid on the rust with the claimed much better adhesion. Now (you may have noticed that 1/4 is primed) I would like to experiment by waiting for the rest of the steel to rust and use acid. Then see if one part weathers better. I washed it down with soap and water but the only part rusting is where I have ground down the welds. Is there something I need to do to get the rest of the steel to rust? Getting steel to rust in Orgeon has never been a problem before.

if you can get the doors off...or if your careful ...try washing with a dilution of muriatic acid ...make it strong enough so it just fizzes when applied.....i use it straight when i want to clean rusted parts ....15 minutes in that and the rust is all gone....but it will get a coat of rust in afew days if left bare after the acid bath

The best way to get an even coating of rust is to wash it down with about 5% muriatic acid in water. You will get more rusting where you ground than where you didn't because between grinding and welding you've removed all of the oil that lubricated the tubing when it was drawn.
If you're in a real hurry to rust it, do electrolosys, and use the door for an anode.

Ryel.........Nice door but from your pictures it appears that a thin person could slip through the openings. Is there also some screening planned to keep out insects or stray critters like cats, rats, possums, skunks, etc? Neat door, lots of welding practice in that project.

You got that right. My son asked how those old lawnmower blades got that rusty .

Odd as it may seem, them yuppie funny dressin antique collectin people want things that are rusty when it comes to certain collectables, so reverse electrolytic rust removal has a market. You can't have a collectable with a replacement piece on it that isn't rusty like the resat of the piece.
They even place a high value on an "equalized petina" when it comes to rust. I never thought I'd get to custom rust something, but I have done it, and charged them thru the nose for doing it too. The best part, they had to bring me the entire machine so I could match the rust, and the machine didn't leave my posession till I had payment in full.

Where I live we don't even lock the doors. Most people around here have a good friend with at least a six inch barrel and six little helpers.

yea, got one of those but around here the little punks are as smart as starlings. After the first few go down they hang back out of range until they see your gone, then swoop in and play ****.

thanks for the idea about muratic acid, will give it a try.

Nice Doors! Great idea to align the tubes.

What did you use for the hinges?

I found these at my steel yard, they just called them 'steel hinges'. They also have pre-made steel lock enclosers but they did not fit with this design so ... maybe next time. I drilled and tapped them to accept the grease fittings. Then hung the door and spot welded them on; took the door down and ran double beads.
