    Welding book

I bought this book ''How To Weld Dam* Near Anything" by Monster Garage about a year ago. I looked it over then quickly and decided that it was waist of money.
Last weekend I went on four day trip and had no time to pick reading material so I grabbed first welding book I seen in my book cabinet.
I do not know what I was looking at when I thought it was waist of money ( I guess I did not grow up to this book yet), but I found this book to be excellent book. It is not a beginners book, but I would say it is a second book full of tips.
Did anybody read this book and what is your opinion?

I have few welding books including "Welding Essentials"( which I find excellent), but most of them are full of theories and that one seams to me to be more practical.

Peronally, from having watched Monster Garage a couple of times, I'd not subscribe to the welding practices demonstrated in that show. Never read the book, but I'll stick with Welding Essentials, thanks.

I had the Monster Garage book, and felt it was good as an overall exposure to different types of welding, and some applications. I would not hesitate to recommend it to a beginning weldor, or better yet to a curious weldor to be, but with the caveat that its not a how-to book. It does answer lots of questions the newbie didn't even know to ask!
There is a lot of lingo and tech talk in our field that goes right over the head of the guy asking" what do I need to weld a floor patch panel in my car?" Often the question comes from someone who does not yet know even what to ask, so a little knowledge will go along way in "easing the entry".

I have Welding principals and apps the fifth edtion. Now thats a great book (if anyone knows of a better one then let me know). As for the monster garge, that book looked childish (from the cover, it was wrapped up so I never got to see the info on the inside at the book store) so I never bought it.

I'll agree that you can't learn to weld from a book, but you certaily can learn about metallurgy, technology, joint preparation, and a host of other things not exactly "arc-on" specific.

I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent and above average in mechanical ability, but I had no clue where to begin when I bought my first O/A rig. Books are good!

Rats, I have been doing it wrong all my life. Only read a bunch of books and never took a class. Can I repent?

Ahh, a sinner as I am! Repent? What's to repent? Books have taken me far and wide without a single hands-on experience. I''ll never discount the value of learning from a book!
