    Shop Plans / Ideas

    Hello All,
I'm trying to build myself a 24x30 ( or around that ) shop on a ranch in central texas. No great snow / wind loads here. This will be on a slab. I wanted to see if anyone had any plans or ideas for a weld together shop this size. I can always go to Mueller and get a bolt together kit, but I was wondering if I would save a significant chunk of money putting something together myself. I have not found any plans for building this size. I know Mueller uses 6in. purlins for their building, this is your standard 14 guage sheet metal, red iron purlins. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Sam

It would surprise me if you could save much, if any, by not getting the Mueller building. By the time you buy everything you would need I'm betting you will have as much in it as the kit. The labor putting a kit building up should be less than fabricating all of it yourself also. If you have access to some cheap beams or similar material you might come out ahead but remember the labor factor.

    BTW, welcome to the forum.

Go twice as big. I wish I had. Try to find your metal used instead of new and save a fortune.

Hey Sam, welcome to the sandbox.

I am in the process of building myself a 35x45 weldup. A bolt up would have cost me 4500 bucks more in materials alone. When you get a bolt up, you are paying extra for the engineering, plans, fabrication of plates, beams etc. It all adds up. Then, they won't do certain things with out extra money...like change door locations and things like that. Mueller makes an acceptable building, but I wouldn't get one. I would rather do it myself and save the money and hassles. I have heard quite a few Mueller horror stories of late.

As to construction, they are simple to build. There are quite a few different ways to do it as well.....all work just fine. Myself, I went with W8x15 beams for structural beams and columns, 4x2 14ga purlins on 4' centers for the walls and 8" purlins on 4' centers for the roof. Pretty standard stuff.

Here is a recent pic of my frame. It is a long story as to why I am dong it like I am, but it was necessary to add on to the old shop, which looks like a crackerbox next to the new one. If you wish, I can post a link to the entire story.

    You say Central Tx....where perzactly?

http://www.heritagebuildings.com You might give these folks a call. I did and got a better building for less money than any other place I priced buildings. I might add that their building I purchased (40' x 100' 14' sidewall) went together without trimming a single bolt hole and was square when I finished. They are not for from Texas either.

    Have a great day,

What kind of riggery or jiggery is used to hold up the heavy steel while you bolt or weld it in place?
You hammer the iron that lay on your anvil, instead of daydreaming of working silver.

You can rent riggery and jiggery things if you don't own them.

My last shop was nice. It was a do it yourself kit (with a few friends). I had the A style 30' x 30'. I purchased the insulation package. I really enjoyed the process. They have styles for any need. And at this time of the year you can get discounts on many packages.
