    I've given up for now.

After reading about the crazy Sears sale on the HH187 I decided to scrap my plans for a Linc 175. I mean, I've gotta figure out a sensible way to get a HH187 for $544 + exchange. It's not an impossible task, I need OOB thinking to get this done.

Till now I had a blast yesterday with my old 110v Century. It still works fine. Solid old unit after 17? years, 13 years in storage. Anyway, played a bit, did a fillet or two, a couple butts and realized I was working with 1/4" stuff! Wow, decent penetration form a quick check, stood up to BHF test OK, surprise. Need to section and etch to check further. If things look OK might keep to old Century tills it dies, if ever. Actually had some fun today and weather to match.

It doesn't look like you are far from the US border. Do you know anyone in NY state that would let you have it shipped there? You could then drive down and pick it up. By the way Sears charges $35 to deliver it, so you need to add that to your cost.

My American side of the family are mostly in and around, ready for this Georgia, oh, and Vermont. I'm 2 hours from the border but driving is tough on me. Really awful. My Dad is 45 minutes from Ft. Erie/Niagara.

Sounds like you could have it shipped to Niagara then and have your dad ship it to you. Of course then you are up to the $35 for Sears shipping, plus whatever it costs your dad to reship to you. I don't know if there is a duty on welders into Canada from the US.

He'll still get killed with Duty when is Pop sends it- That's why things cost mo' up there to begin with. Even if it's sent as a gift I do believe 60 bux is the most allowed to ship w/o having to pay the Duty taxes.

I had offered to buy a Ring Roller that only shipped US for Doug and send it to him but in the end it was going to be just too much hassle and money- luckily he found a place in Ohio that would ship to CA-

    Me too

Wally - I'm with you - I want one too - and at the Sears price - not the $1100 I see around here. I'm an hour from the border too - I am trying to think of an easy way to buy one from Sears.com and get it delivered- Sears.ca Canada does not offer and Sears US won't ship to Canada - I tried.

I did not try to have one shipped to a Sears store just over the border and pick up at the store - don't know if they support that option.

If you come up with something - let me know. Maybe we can talk a Canadian member into a multi-unit buying road trip for gas money

Duty is based on Country of Manufacture. There should be no duty if they are mfg in US or Mexico. Someone please tell us where they are made and I can figure out the duty.

Take it out of the box and toss the box in Sears dumpster. Then make a few sparks with it to dirty the tip and kick a big dent in the side of it. When you get to the border, tell the customs agent you let your brother in law borrow it, and look what the son of a ***** did to it!

Sure you'll have a dented welder, but you'll have it for half price

Bear in mind that in addition to the cost of getting the unit physically (whether by courier or driving to the US), upon re-entry into Canada you will have to declare it and pay at least tax on it (14%).

I went through this whole deal when getting my TIG unit, had a number of people in the US willing to ship it here, but the cost of importing was just killer. You don't want to risk under-declaring its value, lest the package be damaged or lost in transit. Strangely, most couriers won't let you insure a package with a declared value of $500 for $3000...

Ya, it's a hassle. No duty but everything is taxed @ 14% when it comes in. Legalized theft IMO. I can order stuff from Alberta (which has no sales tax) and pay no sales tax when the item arrives in Ontario.

    I'm still thinking of options.

edit> Ah, if I only had lots of scratch. I used to buy ACs from Sams and after paying taxes and exchange still sold them for a healthy profit where I live. Mind you, I was bringing 4 or 5 back at a time. I'm a little leery there's enough demand for me to flog 3-4 HH187s (if I did a roadtrip and picked up a truckload of Handlers) where I live to make it worthwhile.

Darryl? Would the Hobart warranty still be good in Canada or would the units have to go back to the USA if they needed service? I shoulda asked that from the get-go.

Hobart warranty is not based on location but on purchase date, any warranty depot could do the repair.

Unless Hobart intentionally prices Canadian units higher, I think you really need to shop around a bit more. I got my MM210 for exactly the price IOC was charging at the time from a local place, plus tax. In the end, it's easier to just save a bit longer than go to all the border running bandito nonsense.
