Anyone used a 5000 watt generator for MIG?

Just bought a new HH140 and was wondering if it would work with a Coleman Powermate
5000 watt generator. Any body tried this out?

    Thanks, Russ

I run my little Lincoln SP 100 off one of them sometimes.
It works,,,,,,, but it really eats on the breakers.
The welder's consumption on about mid-range power settings barely exceeds the output of the generator.

The more ya use it, the more wear, and faster & faster the breakers will trip.
But, the little pop out breakers can't be more than a few bucks to buy and change though.

Thanks guys. I had called Coleman for their take on it and got about what I was expecting.
They said it might work for a while but it would probably take out the stator. Of course a manufacturer is going to be conservative in their advice to cover themselves. I wanted some real world opinions. Apparently the striking of the arc is the bad part. The sudden demand for all that current at one time. The worst that can happen is that I'll ruin the generator and have an excuse to buy a better one.

    Thanks, Russ

Ran my HH135 a lot on one - and it still runs fine. Your mileage may vary.

I run a 240V Lincoln 175T on a 5000 watt Honda generator periodically, and never had a problem. I even got in a jam one time, and ran a Millermatic Vintage off that same Honda. Don't have any experience with a Coleman.

    Zrexxer,
That's good to know. I have a 6200watt dayton generator that I would like to use occasionally with my HH187. The only problem is that the max size 220 breaker is 20A. I may be able to get away with the lower settings on the welder.

Seems odd- This Coleman have a 30amp twist on it? I've run a Honda 3000 with no problems

the Honda is 10 times the machine of the Coleman.

Its in a barn up in East Texas, so I can't run out & look, but I'd swear the little pop out breaker on it is only about 15 amps, and its a real cheap/cheesey one at that.

    Russ,

I never said that I did this, but my house has been run on that Coleman PowerMate 5KW rig. The panel was backfed through a 30-amp outlet in the garage, and the joint ran on it from dawn 'till dark for three days. Say what you will about Coleman gennys (and I have said some unkind things myself prior to owning this one) but this particular rig with it's 10-hp Briggs (noisy sucker!) is pretty tough.

I ran a 140 on a new Yamaha 2400 inverter. Really slick setup. Inverters are a bit different
then a standard generator. I feel like with the tapped Hobart, you are going to have a pretty
reliable setup of a decent generator. I was impressed because the Yamaha weighs 70 pounds and will give you a pretty light weight overall setup. I am sure most of the
little migs would run well of this machine. (except the passport that is. It needed more
juice. I think the 3000 inverter Honda would run that unit and probably the 2800 Yamaha too.
