    Question 220v Extension Cord

    Well I need to build an extension cord for my new Lincoln SP175T Mig Welder & need a little help with needing to know how to wire the extension cord.

    I want to be able to plug this into my dryer recepticle.

    This is what I have;
    60' of 10/3 Wire
    Female Plug For End Of The Extension Cord That Plugs Into The Welder
    Male End Of The Extension Cord That Plugs Into The Dryer Recepticle

    What I Need To Know Is What Wire Goes Where.

    The 10/3 Wire Has 3 Wires In It
    Green
    Black
    White

    The Male End That Plugs Into The Dryer Recepticle Has 4 Wires
    Red
    Black
    White
    Copper (Ground?)

    The Female Plug Has 3 Places For The Wire To Connect
    Small
    Large
    Middle

    Anyone know how to wire this extension cord up, or a site to point me in the right direction to do this?

    Thanks in advanced.

    On the male end you will not use the white.

    Cord White -> male black
    Cord Black -> male red
    (These can be done vice versa since it is single phase)
    Cord Green -> male bare

    As for the female, there shoulde be 2 slotted prongs (hots) and one that is sort of circulare shaped, that is your ground and inside the plug itself it should have a green screw to fasten it.

    Cord White -> Female slotted
    Cord Black -> Other female slotted
    (Again these can be hooked up vice versa)
    Cord Green -> Female Ground (The middle round shaped one)

    Since your male end is prewired be sure you are putting it in a proper junction box and are using the correct fittings and wire connectors.
    Post pictures of your connections when you are done so one of the guys here can double check it for you.

    sounds right robby

    i agree with robby. with what he gave you. i to had to use the ol dryer plug at one time but i got lucky and only had the three prong so hook up was a snap, just disregard the white wire on the male end as it is not needed. and you should be fine.

    What you should have:

    For the male plug to the dryer outlet: NEMA 14-30P. Connections are marked inside: X, Y, G, W. You will use the X and Y connected to the black and white cord leads, and the G connected to the green lead.

    For the female (welder) end: NEMA 6-50R. Conections are marked inside: X, Y, G. You will connect the cord's white and black wires to X and Y. The green wire goes to G.

    Weld on!

    Thanks Robbbby, I wired up the extension cord & it works great.

    I will post pics of the connection at the junction box on the extension cord asap.

    I would also like to say how great this forum is, I have been lurking & reading on here for quite sometime, I have learned alot & seen some great work.

    I will post some of my stuff sometime, I am more into offroad stuff, but plan on fabbing some stuff for around the house / shop too.
