I went and checked it out!

    Hey hey.

Well I just got back from a little place called Whakatane. I went over yesterday morning to see a man about a job.
    This Job:
    http://www.hobartwelders.com/mboard/...ad.php?t=17415

I went to a place called Allied Industrial Engineering or AIE for short.
    http://www.aie.co.nz/default.asp

Where I might be working for a month on the Fabrication team for the annual shut down of the a Pulp and Paper mill in a even smaller place called Kawerau ( 30 Km out of Whakatane).

A friend of mine is the fabrication team leader at AIE. He asked me to come over and he'd show me round. Anyway as I expected he asked me to run a few test welds for him. I said sure. He grabs some 5/8" plate scraps and tells me to run a fillet on a T-joint. So I ran a 3 pass fillet spraying with 0.045" (1.2mm) wire. Which he said was beautiful. Then he takes me to the next work station where he grabs more 5/8". Switches on this awesome little Miller XMT 350 ( http://www.millerwelds.com/products/...ocess/xmt_350/ ) with a Miller 24A Wire feeder. He asked me to run another fillet using 1.2mm (0.045") Dual Shield Flux Cored, after which he said I was a gun. I was pretty pleased with how it went.
I hope I get the opportunity to work for them. Not only will I gain valuable experience but I'll get to use sweet machines!

I'll find out within a week or two if the need me or not.

    Now after travelling I'm stuffed.
    Later guys

    Andrew

Ok guys. Here the only pics I managed to snap with my phone. Sorry they are so blurry, I was in a major hurry. The first is of the Miller I ran the Flux Cored in. The second is one of the test peices I did. A 3 pass fillet done with FC. It looks a bit rough because I didn't chip the slag off the top pass.

    Good Luck!!

Howdy Howdy! Good Luck in getting that work! You should be ready for massive overtime as those jobs/plants do not like to shut down for long at all! I know a bunch of folks in my trade, (electricians) who every year work 80+ hour weeks for 4 weeks a year replacing all the corroded and completely eaten rigid conduit and wiring within for paper mills in our region. Just be prepared for some very stressed long long hours, but the pay is fantastic!!! P.S. around here, they like the same guys to come back every recurring year, cause they know they perform well, and are familiar with the working of the plant. So if you get it one year, you are likely to get it the next if you perform very well being on this forum, shows your comitted to good work! Good Luck! Brian Lee Sparkeee27! See if they'l let you get some picks of your work when you get the job please, and keep us informed! Good work!

    Thanks Brian, Hotfoot and NOS.

Its not going to be too bad. 10hour days 6 days a week. AIE the engineering company I'll be working for was setup originally to service to mill. Throughout the year they maintain the plant, most of the work done during the shut down will be preventitive maintenance, Ya know, repair it before it breaks. Probably alot of build up work. Still you are very much correct, its costing them millions shutting down for 4 weeks and I'm sure they'll want everything done yesterday. I don't plan on getting too stressed, thats what supervisors are for. Thanks all for your support and kind words. I will keep you posted.

Well guys, I spoke to the Engineering Manager at AIE today and he is happy for me to work for them. I have to meet with him in a few weeks to finalize things but its looking good at the moment.

I'll report as things develop. I hope I'm not setting you all up for some huge anticlimax!
