The first question has too many answers; and you'll probably hear several dozen of them. Basically, start looking at things around you, EVERYTHING. Bridges, rifles, cars, probably even your belt buckle; you will see welded parts on lots of different things; somebody had to weld it. Plus, welders like most of us on this forum are complete shop mechanics as well; so a knowledge of all power and hand tools is almost a must.
The second question is easier. You should start with a good stick or oxy-fuel welding class; and take both of them eventually. Try your local community college. Usually in their catalog, they will list the recommended order for the classes, sometimes even listing them as prerequisites for each other.
Mort, the wold is your canvas anything from decor to heavy equipment repair on to bridge building etc..... as far as schooling can't tell you much about that got mine the hard way.I'm sure there some good classes in your area around here I hear that Greenville Tech. has the best welding classes.
Good Luck and keep on keeping on!!![]()
