    O/a

Hey, I was recently given two huge O/A tanks. I talked to a guy at the local Tractor suppy store and he said they would switch them with theirs... a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. I am relatively new to the metal fab world and i was wondering if anyone had any advice on which torch set i should get. i am a college student and dont have alot of money. I would like to be able to heat, cut, and weld with them and the brochure said i should get 120 minutes of burn time. Can anyone tell me what all i need and what a cheap but good set is. Thanks everyone!

I think Esab (Purox) is cadillac equipment, but not all that easy to get in Houston. Look at your local dealers and see what they sell the most of and buy that whether from them or internet. I suspect Victor or Smith will be the most common.

Look on Ebay and find some that fit in your price range. You want new equipment. Probably what you'll find is something from Smith or Victor. Also search this site in the "welding products" section for a wealth of info on purchasing a new torch. Specifically you might look for the Victor super ranger.

You can expect to find a new Victor SuperRange II rig for $200. That would include the 100FC handle, cutting head with one 0-3-101 tip, and one #2-W welding tip, 25' of "T" grade hose, 300-series regulators, a striker, and a pair of goggles. I bought one a couple of months back. Also, there's nothing wrong with used equipment in GOOD shape. My "J" series Victor is 40 years old, I'm the third owner, and it still is in top condition. Just be sure you see it before you buy!

If I wanted to get a torch set up cheap I would start looking at pawn shops. Look it over very good for abuse and aproximate age. Don't pay what they are asking, if I don't hurt their feelings I know I paid too much. Check to see if they will take it back if you find a problem with it since you can't test it there. Try to stay with American made too, parts and acc should be available.

I agree to buy what's available locally. I have a Harris, and while it does a fine job, it's hard to get tips locally.
