LarryL - If you re-read my comment, you will notice that at no time did I question your intelligence or your common sense, nor did I rant or rave. What seems to be in question here is your knowledge of the dangers of asbestos exposure.
A medical background doesn't necessarily imply any specialized education concerning asbestos problems, as I have spoken to several doctors over the years who have been completely clueless to any but the basic facts of it's final effects. In fact, many doctors will never see a case where asbestos is named the culprit, for the reasons I mentioned in my last entry - no one is looking for it! The only folks who are really knowledgable (doctors included), naturally are those directly involved in high risk areas (ship yards, construction work, mines, etc.).
Most people, doctors included, are quite convinced that asbestos has been outlawed, and completly eliminated as a health threat, which is exactly what the asbestos producers and the government want the public to think. This keeps the profits rolling in from continuing sales and keeps the public from demanding the government stop a problem that it's afraid to face.
End result?? The public, especially the blue collar worker is left, once again, in harm's way with no help or end in sight.
Now, if you find that offensive that's a good thing, because we all should find that offensive!

    Dont Panic

Some of the activities listed were:

    painting
    remodeling
    automobile repair
    smelting
    shooting/reloading

    AND

    WELDING

So I checked the appropriate boxes and gave it back to the nurse. She said we had some risk factors for lead exposure and asked me if I wanted to have some "lead" testing done on my daughter. I told her I didn't feel it was necessary and that was the end of it. But I found it odd to be asked these questions.

Very little of anything is welded/soldered with lead anymore except electronics. And just because I participate, doesn't mean my 8 month old daughter is at risk. I guess if I got it on my hands and touched her maybe, but it's not like I put a welding helmet on her and have her hold my work peice steady. Heck, the dang diapers are a fire hazard.

Anyway, just found it odd, and I think the AMA is going overboard and being just a bit paranoid. I mean, if it's so unhealthy, why would I mess with it and poison myself?
