View Full Version : 220v arc (buzz box) powered 110 mig?

My buddy just did this, sounds too easy to be true - is this ok to do? Using the 110 to basically drive the wire and the 220 for the arc on the wire?

Why did he do it?
Did he succeed?
This may backfire on him and burn out either welder.

I did it , but it wasn't so easy for me. I had to build a rectifier and inductor and add alot of capacitance and a reostat before it would work, but then I had an AC buzz box. I found out real quick that the gun wasn't made for that kind of amperage if I would have welded for very long the gun would have become a plastic puddle. So I would not do it.
I found an old Miller wire feeder at a sale and use it with it now and it works very good.
