I have an old AC buzzbox stick welder and am wondering if it can be converted to a plasma cutter. Am I way off base, or what?

I am no authority on plasma cutters.

From what I read the power supply has to output a very high voltage for the arc, about 300 DC volts. OCV. Open Circuit Voltage. Your buzz box is AC and its OCV is about 40 volts.

I don't think this is going to fly.

Thanks for that. I thought I saw somewhere that either old buzz boxes or battery charges could be used for this somehow. I may have misunderstood what I was reading.
Thanks.

Some of the other guys are now talking about converting them for TIG welding but I haven't done it myself.

It'll be real basic without a hole lota voltage control but Hey, go for it!

Checkout what the guys are talking about, their experience and ideas is fun to read about.

This is the link to where Dan is talking about converting a buzz box to TIG. He was using DC though, oh well.
