That's right, I don't know the terminology, I just use the thing.

There are lots of threads regarding the optical aspects of helmets, but my issue is with the cream-colored part that clamps the helmet to my head. And not with the clamp, but with the little racheting bits at either temple that I try to adjust to get the thing to flip right. I've always had Jackson helmets, and have always found it hard to get them to work well for any length of time. Yes, I have looked at the diagram of how to assemble the little pieces and THINK I have them in the right order and direction, etc., etc., ALTHOUGH I'm having more trouble with the latest one than I remember having before, and the design of these parts hasn't changed, I don't believe.

My opinion is that the escapment is a poor design from a basic mechanical standpoint for the reason that the diameter is about that of a nickel; if it were the diameter of a fifty-cent piece it would be a whole lot less touchy to adjust.

And maybe there are better designs form other helmet makers??

Am I just too dumb, or is this a problem for others?

The doohickey your talking about is the headgear. They are brand specific(for the most part) and usually or easily not interchangable.
Your in luck because Jackson recently(a few months ago)came out with the model 370 and it seems to be a well designed headgear.

I had trouble getting a controlable flip from my Miller Elite until I took the o-rings off that are under the nuts on the outside.

Thanks, Mike,

Looking at the Jackson site, the #117 replacement headgear is the only one I see, and that looks unchanged from what I have. I googled sites for Huntsman and Speedglas, but couldn't view the headgear.

I have 2 Jackson's and 1 set of headgear is a replacement and works well. The hood stays up, but is easy to flip down. The one I have at home doesn't tighten up much and slowly comes down if I try to walk with it on.
Huntsman is now owned by Jackson. The older headgear is different. The new Huntsman headgear is the same or very close to standard Jackson headgear. Now Huntsman seems to be Jackson's bottom grade. The hoods sell for a couple $ less. The best Huntsman auto darkening hoods are only 2 sensors too.
You are correct that all the tension is on those 2 nickel-sized washers.

You can get it here; http://store.cyberweld.com/ja370he.html.

Never bought anything from them so don't know how good they are to deal with. Make sure the 370 will fit your hood. I bought one for my Halo-X hood and I LOVE it! Very, very comfortable. Has a position to lock in upright position. Over all a very nice headgear. Best I've used and much better than the new Speedglas headgear. Then again, opinions are like armpits.;)

Bob, I wish I had seen this thread sooner. I just got my 370 Saturday. It is super. Cyberweld has a $25 minimum, so I ordered a pair of Mig gloves also.
