I'm thinking about purchasing a Speedglas 100V helmet since the price is attractive and it has the 8-12 variable shades.

I'm a casual welder using both a Mig and Tig and have found that I couldn't see the puddle very well with my old Speedglas Utility with a #10 fixed shade. In fact, I've been using my old Jackson non-auto darkening helmet with a #9 glass lens which works well except the inconvenience.

So I wonder if anyone here has a Speedglas 100V and, if so, how do you like it? If you don't like it, why not?

The other thing I was wondering about and couldn't find in any of the Speedglas literature, is how much does the 100V hood weigh? Anyone know?

Thanks

Dom

It looks like a pretty well balanced helmet, but I've never used one. If you know what kind of work you want a helmet for, I honestly think that you would be better throwing an auto lense into a standard helmet. I can see the variable lense shade being benificial though if you plan to burn several processes at varrying amperages. :D

Like most auto's though, finding cover plates can be fun. Getting a company that you work for to get them in stock can be even more fun...especially if it isn't for a common helmet style.

I have a Speedglas SL and it is the lightest hood on the market...shades 8 - 13, and four sensitivity positions. Well worth the money. I wish I had it 40 years ago, and my neck wouldn't be messed up like it is now.

Rocky,

Do you have cheater lenses in the SL to see better? I have thought about an SL, and have cheaters in the single shade Jackson HSL AD with a little window. I am looking to moving to a better hood, but need the cheaters.

Yeah, Garfish, I have a 2.00 diopter lens taped in. Works great. I believe this is the lightest hood on the market.

I've got a Miller Elite, a Jackson and a Speedglass 9200. The Miller and the Speedglass are the only two rated for TIG. I found that going to a 11.5 is about right for my eyes and TIG. At 11 I could weld but got sand eye after a couple of hours. Below 11 I'd start to loose focus and at 10 I was spending a lot of time grinding tungsten. It's a toss up as to which is better between the Miller and the Speeglass and the price isn't that far off either.. I think all the upper end helmets use the 3M glass anyway.
