I'm welding about a 2-1/2" piston attaching the yoke to the end of the piston. I'm extending the piston all the way out to prevent melting the seals, clean and bevel both pieces at about a 40degree angle, about 3/4"+- deep. Tig the root, maybe 2 passes, stick the rest with E11018. Oh and a little preheat before the root. Any body out there see any problems with my procedure?????

Yup don't do it or it may end up like this one in the pic that i had to fix after someone tried to weld it. Why can't you screw it on like its supposed to be. Just wondering...Bob

That was ugly, the job turned out really well i should have took some pictures but it was beer time when we got done. this one didn't have threads it was the main cylinder on the backhoe. I could see the original bevel that was on the piston which makes me wonder how good the original weld was. it had been broken for a while because part of the crack was rusted. cleanlyness is next to good weldlyness Ialways say.
that and having real big hammers helps too.....Does for me anyway:D
