A great deal depends on what aesthetics you will need to match. Gates can be made out of anything you mind can conjure up. I use toprail from the orange apron guys for my home which is a kennel, basically...that gate matches the decor of the surroundings. This is a 16' swing gate.

This is a gate I repaired. An 18' swing gate....while it looks good, it is a bad design in that no swing gate should be over 16'...too much sag. see the whole project <<here>> (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v252/RockyD/GATE%20REPAIR/)

This guy's stuff always trips me out. I hope to make stuff 1/10 as interesting.

That guy makes good use of scrap from a CNC cutter of some sort. Great imagination.

So the next thing that will sag is the posts... <g>

On the last pic of the hinges, it shows the back. Why not weld the back of the plates to the posts? Keep out the weather.

Basically, it would be too difficult to setup. I had to clamp the gate in the shut position to apply the hinges.

Weather here in So Cal is mostly sunshine. :p

OK, bear with me here. I haven't done this stuff for a living or at all even. It _looks_ like after doing the other welds, you could just lay a "filler" bead along those edges, not for structure but for closure. Is this not the case? What am I missing, something to do with messing up the edge of the plate?

I guess poly urethane caulk would do the job just as well, though. That stuff seems to last forever.
