View Full Version : Suggestions for another Forum?
Hotfoot

As many of you know, the moderators of this forum have been dis-allowing many of my posts to be put up....and none of them offensive in any way. This keeps happening, and I continue to get no explanations to why they continue to do this.
So, I conclude that I might just be in the wrong place. You guys participate in lot of other forums, any suggestions on where my goofy art pieces might get posted?

Miller?
Shop Floor Talk?
Welding Web?

Foot,
Not to be a smart@ss or beg the question, but have you asked them directly why you're postings are not allowed?
I've been a member for a while now and have seen nothing in your written postings, and nothing in your original artwork that would or could be considered as offensive.
Cheers,
Jim

I have, and usually get nothing specific back...and it keeps happening. two postings done two days ago yet to surface, and probably won't. I hadone human addressing the problem in the beginning, but she soon disappeared...but never would say anything more than "new Syste", "'new people"...but it sure seems to keep happening almost exclusively to me.. The last couple just bobbed to the surface days later (and not all of them, at that), with no explanation about why they were diverted, or by whom...and what I should do or not do to avoid the problem.:(
I suspect the Miller site uses the same folks, so that's out.

Lot of good folks at Shop Floor Talk....I'd say it's my favourite forum. The 'mods' are also admins, and if there are issues, they're usually fixed pretty quick. Only thing 'different' is they use forum hosting for pics, rather than using something like photobucket.
Actually, it has a lot of advantages for most people, and it keeps the picture sizes consistent for the poor folks that have to suffer through dial up still.

Since Shop Floor Talk is not corporate owned, they are pretty liberal about what is done there. I check here and Miller, but SFT is where I hang out more these days. Lots of Texans on there too.:D

I really don't find much activity on Shop Floor Talk, at least pertaining to welding.
I like WeldingWeb Forum and AWS Forum
Now, the newsgroups (newsnet) is a different story. Get yourself a news reader like Forte Free Agent and you can have some real fun. You can also access the groups in a disjointed sort of way with your web browser at Google Groups. Google don't "have" groups, though they like to playact that they do.

I haven't been able to get any original posts through either, not sure what the major disconnect is here. I really enjoy the forum layout and everything here....except for not being able to participate, that is. I suppose my next choice would be weldingweb. I hope the mods start letting your posts through, I really enjoy them.

I briefly had some trouble getting posts through, but apparently no longer. Who knows, try blowing away cookies, clear the cache, reboot, swab the deck?
Maybe try posting in different accents, like "Y'all" or "Youse guys"?:D

You have probably noticed that the spam has pretty much disappeared. I'm not an expert but when I questioned it on the Miller site, I was told that it all had to do with the IP addies ect.
Also as been stated this is a corporate site, and companies do strange things for strange reasons. I don't think that it will work contacting them in an open forum you will have better(faster) response trying to PM them or use the first forum
Announcements
Check out the latest site news from the administrative staff.
As I have noticed that a lot of forum users pay no attention to the heading in where they ask questions or make statements.
and on some forums they then whine about nobody answering them.
I can't see why you and your pictures would pose a problem for them. If anything it might sell a couple more welders etc if nothing else a pile of MIG wire.
The other thing is with the economy and cut backs, the number of bodies might be thinning out. Of course there is no payed help moderating on weekends.
Have your tried to use this on the right side upper corner above the ad pictures? Feedback/Help Below the word logout and above Introducing.
Not trying to be a smart A$$ but people tend not to pay attention to the nuts and bolts of the forums. As a moderator on another forum, we get a number of question all the time that if the party would look at the forum the question would be self answering.
I for one hope it gets worked out, and you don't leave !
And if you do let us know where you land.

Along with everyone else, I would hate to see Hotfoot leave, but I certainly understand his frustration. He has for years been an inspiration to us all, and always willing to help a newbie, at least I know he has to me.
A forum should not be hard to use, and one of its most prolific posters should not have to jump through hoops to share his work with the rest of us. This site has been a tremendous help to me in learning to weld (or at least stick it together sufficiently for its purpose) and helping me decide on equipment. I have always gotten faster answers here than any other welding forum I visit. I would hate to see it deteriorate.
Wherever you go Hotfoot (or is it HillCo now?) , as PT said, let us know.
As PT says, perhaps forwarding out comments to the web admin is not the right way to get action. It apparently hasn't worked for Hotfoot. I am thinking maybe a letter to Hobart corporate might get more attention, although I know the Hobart engineers read this forum too.

"Have your tried to use this on the right side upper corner above the ad pictures? Feedback/Help Below the word logout and above Introducing."
Yep. A couple times. Got response once. I had a sincere sounding lady helping towards the beginning of this mess, but she faded away. I'm setting up over on WeldingWeb, and I'll see how they traet me over there. I'll still check back here, but all of my new postings will be over there...at least for the time being...I may try yet another...
..and JimDon "Not to be a smart@ss or beg the question, but have you asked them directly why you're postings are not allowed? "..Yup, Yup, and yup. I asked if they would just tell me, I could adjust my wording or content, but they won't say why. They are obviously selectively editing just a couple members.
Hotfoot,
If I remember correctly the only post you are having problems with are your ones with photo's attached and I suspect that the photo software you use may be causing the issue with their new spam filter.

I found this in the FAQ's
What files types can I use? How large can attachments be?
In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes. Files that are larger than these sizes will be rejected. There may also be an overall quota limit to the number of attachments you can post to the board.
Maybe trying to load too many photos at one time triggers this?
I don't know but I would truely be sorry to see you leave over this. I think you are an asset to the board and frankly I am not a fan of weldingweb

HOTFOOT - Please don't go elsewhere. I love your projects - so inspiring.
ADMINS - Please resolve the issue with Hotfoot's post - I can understand why he is frustrated - but I for one come here often just to see what he has been up to. He is an excellent contributor and I have learned a lot from him among others.

Perhaps it is TinyPic, which I've been using for two years, after Photobucket started having all sorts of problems on their own site.
The image sizes are teh same...
as are the number of images (I seldom go over three, but have gone four acouple times...but those times they took it....but all or any of thses should be understood by the program administrators they use...my frustration comes from the lack of any explanation. If they said "no TinyPic", fine, etc., but they say nothing beyond "we're trying to figure it out". When they release a post after two days, but do not release the others, someone somewhere has made some decisions...I just wanted to know what the parameters are!:o

The image size (in WxH pixels) may be the same, but the images
are compressed when making the JPG file. Depending on the settings
in effect when the file was actually made, it might be larger or
smaller -- and perhaps that might be going over some unstated
limit (or the sum of the sizes of the image files in a single post,
or the sum of the image sizes posted over the last X hours or ...)
That said, there should be an explanation ... even an automated
"this is the computer, i am rejecting your post because ...." that
gets emailed to you would be nice and should not be impossible.
Good Luck

Don't leave over it hotfoot!
I am having problems as well. 1/2 way through responding to several posts it 'resets' and doesn't post the reply. I think its just problems related to the changes made to block spamming. My ip address is frequently blocked because others that use the servers have been nailed for spamming i think.

The admins need to respond to this problem because after attempting to respond 3 times to a posting I gave up.
Admins please respond!!!

after Photobucket started having all sorts of problems on their own site.
I still use photo bucket and don't have any problems. To copy the photo use Ctrl C after highlighting the part you want copied. Its the adobe flash new version that is causing the problems at photobucket. I removed the new version and went back to an older version and quite having problems.

I have to think, you have a problem in the nature of your net-ID.
I have as wide a topic range as any, and have never been blocked,
or delayed.

Stick around my friend.;)
Some of the E-mails sent me go to spam, and I have to think it's the
junk that's in their provider.

Update: Well, it seems to be working now...I've resumed using TinyPic (to test, really) on my last couple "Dinosaur" posts, but cut my image size to 640x480 max, I had begun using larger (740), because it had been passing thru just fine. I used the "Paper Clip" and "Yellow Box" method for a few, but the image size that posted was very small, compared to the ones that come up using TinyPic.
Photobucket did go through its own glitches few years back, but at that time another member steered me to TinyPic, and I've just hung there. Both are fine.
This is a great forum, and I'm sure Hobart's sales do not depend on its existence, so I am VERY grateful for Hobart's FREE gift! I have been posting over on WeldingWeb during my latest round of posting problems...running some identical posts, just as a test...so far, none have failed "over there"...couldn't use my same handle over there..was already in use (maybe by me, but with some other password??)

Hobart's sales may not depend on its existence, but be assured that they are indeed deriving value - AND sales - from this forum. They're using it in their marketing, there are quotes from the forum on the main web page, and even Miller has started pulling quotes from the Miller forum as testimonials on their product pages.

I would let just about any-thing remotely pertainant stand,
as long as it wasn't obsene or just plain rediculous.
A discerning visitor will extract at least one, more than likely several
bits of usefull information from a forum. And I'll bet that often
ideas on forums actually initiate a use for products, free from
the tests of the over-active legal community, that is like a snare
to entangle any result to make a buck from.
Useually a consencus of professional or at least practicing thought
rises to the moment, and becomes the heart of the matter
in most threads.
