View Full Version : Was pretty pissed
I got a bunch of pieces
to fixture weld the other day....They were suppose to be 304 and I used 308 filler on them...The first couple parts welded great and looked nice then the next part I welded was really different from the first parts, welding wise....
Instead of the shiny free flowing weld I was getting it seemed to try and "Undercut" and wasn't shiny and smooth......I'm thinking the guy that laser cut these pieces slipped a piece of 303 or some other grade in not thinking about the welding process....This ever happen to any of you guys?

when i get a piece of ss off the laser i have to shine up the edges with a wire brush because off the laser slag.is there any chance of that interfering with the weld?i have also had the problem welding ss with 309 filler by accidently grabbing the wrong wire.hope this helps
Yeah I thought of the laser cut but this was like what you get with a different material grade...Really threw me for a loop...
a while back we had a good batch of 304 that was really bad! i think it turned out to be low silicone or high silicone. either way it was poop to weld, almost no matter what you did, mig/tig gasses, trails...
it did not weld the way it should... it welded mig, as 309/317 does, really dark, almost burnt looking.
but it was 304[l] they ran some test and everything turned out to be in spec. it just welded like crap, and this lasted about a month. it was not fun!
so maybe its juts a really bad batch of 304/308
i think we are having a similar problem with some copper-nickel material that we have been working or for about 7 months now.. haha!
Are things pretty slow over there? I see that the airlines are offering killer deals on air travel right now......I was stationed at Barbers Point when I was in the Navy 1966-1972
And my wife and I got Married at McKena Point (Maui) I would like to come back for a visit some day soon.....
its slow everywhere...
but i live in seattle for the most part. but thinking of moving back down to cali for a few months...
my work up here has been really slow for the last 3-4 months and if i do end up getting layed off, i think i am going to move to north cal for a little while.
as for hawaii, its slow but since its a bit of it own world, i dont think it is as bad off as some of the main land. yeah i have been seeing tickets for cheap, if i was smart i would head back soon :)
Nor Cal Is pretty tight for Tig welders unless you can get into a semi-conductor company and they don't pay much more than 26.00 bucks an Hr......And those companies lay off a lot....If you get to Nor Cal give us a ring for lunch.....

It must be expensive to live in Cali or Kentucky is just stuck in the past. A stainless tig welder here will start as low as 9 hr and with a ceiling of 20~22 hr with about 17-18hr average, unless they are a union pipe liner with 30yrs experience then you can get ~25-30. Regardless congrats on being well paid.

Since 1999 NAS Barbers Point is now Kalaeloa Airport with Coast Guard Air Facility.
That doesn't surprise me with all the air stations that got closed

Yeah it is pretty pricey here in California to live......Last time I checked a journeyman was getting around 28 bucks an hour in the pipe fitters union...
Could be more, and they are screaming for welders......
