hey gentleman, i was wondering if you had to weld a broken axle on an 1984 shortbed what kind of rod would you use. i also have a mig welder it is an older hobart 180 and all i have for it is flux core. i have an old hobart lx stick welder that i would be using for this application. and what type of amps and polarity would be proper to use and stainless rod, or if there is a special rod to use would be very helpful. i appreciate any information you could provide me.
it broke in the middle. it is a posi,i dont know if that is important or not. thanking you in advance. snakesaver(mike)

As cheap and plentiful as 1/2 ton axles are, I wouldn't weld it unless I was in the sticks and that was the only way out. I would be worried about the possibility of add'l stress on the axle from the limited slip diff, too.
As far as welding it, again, because I would be in a less than ideal environment, I would use whatever was available.
Somebody else can explain the metalurgical reasons not to do this.
just my 2.1¢.

Go to the junkyard and get another...or list your need (be sure to list # of splines and which hub (5 or 6 bolt) on Craigslist.:)

get a new one, chances are if it cracked it also bent. You will go through bearings faster than you can put them in.
