I recently looked at some video for a vibrating tumblers. Ball mill keeps coming up. What do you use a ball mill for in a shop environment? Thanks

I don't know about shop setups, but typically ball mills are often found in mining applications. Imagine a large drum, rotating like a tumbler, but inside there are hundreds, or thousands, of metal (usually steel) ***** 2-3" in diameter. Small rock that has been crushed already to a certain point is fed into it, and allowed to rotate. After a period of time, this material will be smaller, much smaller, often this process will reduce it to a powder, or very close to it, depending on the desired outcome. Some of these are setup to be continuous, with the coarse material going in one end, the finished coming out the other.

I have heard of ball mills using ceramic ***** to crush marble in industry.

In the shop, a ball mill would in essence be a rotating drum as opposed to the vibraory tumbler. From what I read, in the shop, the vibratory tumbler is generally preferred over the rotating drum. It is used to clean small metal parts like screws and anything that fits into it. I use one with an aluminum oxide for aggressive cleaning/cutting followed by walnut shells for 24+ hours. Cleans parts very nice.

Back to the original post, there is some small steel and ceramic shot that is used for burnishing.

We have two BALL mills at work ,we use them to grind up coal down to gunpowder size ,then blow it in to the boiler to burn. But the are called Pulverisers. But they actually use steel *****[10 inch dia. to start]they rotate around in a race ,like a giant bearing. The coal falls in there and is ground up.We have two of these and run on average about 100 tons of coal a day thru them.[these are small mills]power plants have the big boys.

A little more than halfway down the page here, there is a description and links to pictures of a large ball mill for coal. http://www.chems.msu.edu/classes/321/powerplant/

Those are really big spherical object thingies (B@!!$)

A coal fired generating plant where I installed some computer systems has three 750 megaWatt generators. Nine ball mills per boiler and seven are required to run a unit at full power - ball mills require a lot of maintenance. Grind the coal to consistancy of talcum powder, blow it with air into the boiler where a controlled explosion is taking place. The boilers are suspended from their tops - from dead cold to full power, they grow by a foot or more from thermal expansion.

Sometimes our boiler grows sideways from Thermal EXPLOSION, which causes Thermal expanison.:D But in our case we call it normal operation.

I've been wanting to build a small ball mill for sometime now. Mine will be for making black powder for my cannon. That stuff is getting very expensive and I want to make a bigger cannon so the only option is to make my own powder.
