The following images are of the running gear I made for my Champion 16. Works good on hard surface or place in trailer and you're mobile. Loops on front, back and sides are for tie-downs.

Leads are:
50' + 15' for ground (connector between) and 50' + 20' (connector between) for the stinger.
I generally use just the 15' and 20' for close-in work.

Dave,
Nice setup. I like the cable hangers. I'll post some pics of my Champ 16 setup when I get a chance.
How do you like doing TIG with the champ? I have found not having a remote for the current is a pain.

Will,
Yes, it's a pain. I've been around in a big circle. I have been told there is no way to wire a remote in.

HI GUYS.........WELL IT IS TRY WE DON'T OFFER A REMOTE FOR THE UNITS.................ANYMORE.............HOWEVER YOU ARE NOT IN THE DARK JUST YET.........PERHAPS THERE IS A WAY........IF YOU GET A LOCAL ELECTRICIAN TO WIRE THIS IN FOR YOU I CAN TELL YOU HOW TO DO IT.............THIS IS FOR REFERENCE ONLY....... IT CAN BE DONE BUT WILL REQUIRE SOME MODIFICATIONS.......... A COUPLE HOLES DRILLED IN THE SHEET METAL.............ETC....... WILL TAKE ABOUT 2 HOURS OR SO DEPENDING ON SKILL...... AND ABOUT 200.00 USA FUNDS TO MAKE COMLETE............IT WILL BE NO FOOT PEDAL JUST A REMOTE THAT YOU TAKE TO THE TIG AREA WITH YOU AND LAY DOWN..............A FOOT PEDAL WILL NOT WORK............THINK ABOUT IT AND LET ME KNOW.............ROCK

Rock,
You bet I'm interested. I had all but given up. I have made numerous calls and "in-persons" regarding this subject. Foot control would be best but "other" would be better than none. What's different about foot control?
Tell me more.
Thanks.

DAVE.......... FOOT CONTROL TAKES 6 WIRE'S YOU DON'T HAVE THE CAPABILITY OF 6 WIRES ONLY 3 OR IN SOME INSTANCES ONLY 2 AVAILABLE..............THINK ABOUT IT OVER THE WEEKEND........ROCK..........SSCOTT@MILLERWELDS.CO M
Well, I guess I am interested too....must be a major modification if it costs $200. But I want to see what I'm getting into first.

You can get 3 prong twist lock(male and female), three pole double throw switch, a reostate for your machine, a metal box(HANDIE BOX) to mount the reo (drill cooling holes), 50 foot of 12/3. Mount sw on face plate, move wires from reo to center poles of sw run wires from sw to reo on the outer poles, opposite poles go to remote female plug( mount to side panel). Wire plug(male),12/3, and Handie box with reo mounted together.BE SURE TO MAINTAIN THE CORRECT WIRE HOOK UP THROUGH OUT. I HAVE DONE THIS MOD TO BOTH LINCOLN AND MILLERS. IT WORKS.
Another way to move a Champ 16 around. I put mine on a trailer so I can get it around the farm where it is needed. I added a couple of cable hangers and some helmet hooks.
Close up of cable hanger.
Last view of Cable hanger and helmet hooks.
Well I thought about it over the weekend Rock, and I am still interested in the remote for the Champ.. What is involved? Are you talking about extending the wires on the built in dial, or something more extensive? It should be possible to build the rheostat into a pedal mechanism. The Manual says it is a 10 ohm 100 watt rheostat. What level of voltage and current is on this?

HI WILL................... PRETTY MUCH LIKE FRANK SAID.........MANY PEOPLE HAVE DONE IT BEFORE...........THIS ONLY WORKS FOR THE NON PC BOARD DESIGNED ONES.......... YOUR GOING TO USE A RHEOSTAE OF THE SAME VALUE AS THE ONE IN THE MACHINE. THE TOGGLE SWITCH TAKES THE RHEOSTATE ON THE FRONT PANEL OUT OF THE CIRCUIT AND TRANSFERE'S IT TO THE ONE IN THE REMOTE CONTROL BOX............LET'S SAY OUT THERE ABOUT 50 FEET..........ALL WE ARE DOING IS CHANGEING FROM THE FRONT PANEL (YOUR CURRENT RHEOSTATE) TO THE REMOTE ONE IN THE CONTROL BOX..............THE TOGGLE SWITCH IS THE ONE THAT TAKES IT OUT OF THE CIRCUIT..............AS I RECALL THE 18 GAUGE WIRE WILL GET YOU TO 50 FEET WITHOUT A SIGNIFICANT VOLTAGE DROP...........THAT IS AS FAR AS I WOULD GO WITH THE EXTENSION............MUCH FURTHER THAN THAT, THEN RESISTANCE OF THE BIGGER WIRE COMES INTO PLAY AND I DON'T THINK THEM OF MUCH USE AFTER 50 FEET.............THAT IS MY PERSONAL OPINION ONLY.....................SO YOU CAN SEE THAT MANY HAVE DONE IT BEFORE YOU AND BECAUSE OTHER'S KNOW HOW TO DO IT ALSO TAKES THE LIABILITY ISSUE OFF OF ME.............HAVE YOUR LOCAL ELECTRICIAN OR WELDER REPAIR TECHNICAN DO THIS FOR YOU...................BE SAFE NOW.............ROCKSSCOTT@MILLERWELDS.COM
It looks like it would be easy to add a connector and switch in the plugged holes that are shown in the attached pic. The foot pedal may be a little harder to fabricate, but it should be possible to fab up a foot pedal that turns the rheostat.....anyone got an old foot pedal they want to get rid of?:D Thanks Rock. I'll let you know how it goes.

Will,
Nice set up with your trailer!
Frank,
Can I talk you out of a little more detail?
1. Size and description of rheostat?
2. When you refer to face plate, is this the welder control panel?
3. What is SW?
4. Side panel is side of welder adjacent to control panel?
More detail would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Dave
Rock...You said that you don't offer a remote for the Champ 16 "anymore". Does that mean that Hobart once sold one??? What was the model number, and can I get a copy of the manual for it? Maybe I can find a used one on the market somewhere.
Thanks
Dave, I think Frank's SW was SWitch. Thanks for the comment on the trailer....Not a lot of work...just bolted it down. No more than a couple of hours into the cable hangers paint and all. I am going to take the sheetmetal off the champ today to see what I am getting into and whether the rheostat is mounted on a PC board or not. I'll post some pics of the inside of it.

HI WILL.........THE ONLY ONE WAS FOR THE PC BOARD CONTROL....... ALL THE REST WERE STANDARD HARD WIRE REMOTES.............. DON'T REMEMBER THE PART NUMBERS......ALL THAT OLD INFORMATION FELL BY THE WAY SIDE WITH THE PRICE SHEETS AOUT 1995-96 TIME FRAME...............HOWEVER I WILL LOOK AROUND AND SEE IF ANY OLD INFO IS HERE ANY MORE.............HAVE MADE ONE CONTACT THAT MAY HAVE IT I WILL LET YOU KNOW.................ROCKSSCOTT@MILLERWELDS.COM
Thanks Rock, I hope you come up with the info. Here are some pics of the control rheostat.
A better pic of the plugged holes on the control panel.
I don't see a PC board Rock. It all looks hard wired to me. I can post the serial number if it will help. It is a late production model though since the new 10000 was out when I bought it. I chose the Champ 16 because it also has AC, the 10000 was DC only.

Rock,
I don't want to sound like I know anything about nuthin... but your comment about not having 6 conductor # 12 wire...available.
They do make cable in a 6 conductor configuration... we use it all the time here for control wiring and pendant controls on cranes and such... any industrial operation should have this... and I'd imagine you could buy it by the foot at suppliers...
now granted it's heavier than 12/3 romex but for the convenience of having the full blown foot control, I'll bet some wouldn't mind the inconvenience. I could probably get some makers and part numbers if anyone is interested ??
just a thought and a suggestion and if everyone already knows this I'm sorry for assuming...

HI JOHN.............HEY MAN CHIME IN ANYTIME YOU WANT.........THE 6 CONDUCTOR I WAS TALKING ABOUT WAS FOR THE FOOT PEDAL. 2 WIRES ARE FOR CONTACTOR CLOSURE USUALLY A&B........THEN THE 3 WIRE'S TO THE POT FOR CURRENT CONTROL D, E, &F AND THE 6TH WIRE I WAS TALKING ABOUT WAS FOR GROUND G......... SOMETIMES I MIGHT NOT MAKE MYSELF CLEAR............ ONLY ONE CHAMPION 16 HAD THE CAPABILITY FOR THIS SET UP AND IT WAS THE PC BOARD DESIGNED ONE...........THAT WAS THE LAST ONE HOBARTS PRODUCED DOWN THE LINE...........NO PROBLEM ON THE COMMENT AT ALL............HEY EVERYONCE IN AWHILE THEY CATCH ME IN A MISTAKE........................ IT IS HUMAN TO ERROR...........................................TH ANKS...............ROCK

HI WILL............THIS IS THE INFORMATION ON THE CHAMPION 16. PLEASE NOTE........FOR THE PC BOARD DESIGNED ONE ONLY. THAT WOULD BE THE LAST ONE GOING DOWN THE LINE....... PART NUMBERS AND DESCRIPTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS.........
8RT764A...........REMOTE ON/OFF
492330-005......REMOTE PENDANT
494808.............KIT FOR REMOTE PENDANT
200460-001......FOOT CONTROL
494808.............KIT FOR FOOT CONTROL
PLEASE NOT THE 494808 IS REQUIRED FOR THE REMOTE CLIP ON STYLE TIG TORCH CONTROL AND FOR THE FOOT CONTROL ALSO. YOU DO NOT NEED 2 KITS ONLY ONE FOR EITHER THE PENDANT OR THE FOOT CONTROL.......... DID YOU THINK I FORGOT..... ENJOY THE SEARCH........................ROCK

Rock, I figured you would come through! Could you tell from my pics if this is a PC board machine? I don't see a PC board, but all I did was take the lid off. I'm sure it is late production, because the 10000 was out when I bought it. Can these parts be ordered through my dealer? I am still torn between doing this or getting the new 180SD and running it off the Champ when I need to be outside the shop. Maybe I need to get prices on these parts so I can see what the cost difference is.
I looked into a wirefeeder for the Champ after I got it, but by the time I got the adapter and feeder, it was more cost effective to get the HH175. So that is what I did. It runs fine off the Champ 16. I can post the Champ serial number if you need it. Thanks for all the help!
