I got a job this morning from one of the machine shops and it was kinda fun......6.5 aluminum pipe and I glued on the flanges...

Straight DC with Grade 5 helium
Big torch 5/32 Tungsten......Gas lens....The hardest part was getting the holes lined up on both
ends (Flanges)

How do you pipe guys do that? I used a level and some short pieces of bar stock....

Welcome to my world.:D

Your welds look good. Hard to get used to not seeing a puddle to dab at, huh?

Yeah it is and I still have a hard time with AMP settings.....I used 180 on this pipe. Pre heated with OA and a rosebud.....Been using Grade 5 Helium. But have some buddies that blend a little Argon with the Helium...Maybe 10 CFH Argon with 70 CFH Helium ....
What do you run on your DC aluminum gasses?

For that type of work, a short machinist's level could come in handy.

i always put two bolts in the holes of the flange and use a torpedo level.block up the pipe so it won't move.works great for me:D

Straight lab grade helium and about 175 amps. 2% 3/32" thoriated tungsten. Grind tungsten to a point then flatten it, just a bit. The worst thing about welding DCEN on aluminum as long as I have is that after holding that tight arc for all those years, when I switch to AC I usually gag the tungsten instead of holding the longer arc.

It's just welding bro!:D

Flange pins my good man.;) They are simple, accurate and inexpensive. You can even make your own if you have access to a lathe. These are nice if you don't have the correct size bolts laying around and much more accurate. Some of these and a good level and your on your way!

Very good I'm setting up the same as you.....I used an 1/8 tungsten but I guess that was ok.....Ever heard of the mixing with 10CFH of Argon?

Cool I guess I did it right then with my pins and level....Actually I can't think of an easier way....

Nope. I don't have the luxury of modifying the WPS to that extent. My welds have to be within the engineers specs.

Give it a try when your you have some free time.....I would like to see what you think.....Less soot and a little more control on the PUDDLE....Nicer looking beads....I use 70 CFH helium and 10 CFH argon....everything else the same....Let me know
