Ive got a Hobart Champion 10,000. I jumped it off with a vehicle and fried a varistor in the circuit board (seems like there would be a sticker saying not to jump off). Since I went against my better judgement and bought a cheaper welder with such terrible customer service and one that I cannot easily buy parts for I now have a pile of junk in the shop floor and a fried $500.00 circuit board(thats what Hobart says its worth). I talked to a guy @ a welding shop who said he could send it off and have it rebuilt for half price. I was needing the parts so I could fix it myself. If anyone can help me with finding parts PLEASE let me know.

Sounds like the varistor did its job and took one for the team. How about giving the rating, manufacture, type, whatever and maybe one can be found cheaply.

The varistor should be easy to replace and is designed to be the only part to fail, when things go as they should.

They are cheap, and should be available at any electronic parts house, even Radio Shack.

Remember that there will also usually be a blown fuse to replace when a varistor fries.

If you aren't comfortable replacing a varistor with a soldering iron, it should be very easy to find someone who can do it. Good case for putting your location in your profile, and local people can offer more advice on sources or help.

In rereading your OP, are you saying the Hobart 10,000 is a cheap welder with terrible customer service? What makes you say this?

You only need to post in one section. Since we've already replied in this one, you can go to the other ones and delete them.

You can't be serious... do I have this right? You connected a vehicle to the leads of the welder, and you're blaming Hobart? This isn't a crank-start Lincoln generator. If you need to jump a dead battery, you connect the vehicle's battery to the welder engine's battery. Done properly, there's no way you can fry a circuit board.

Oh, and Hobart's customer service is the best in the industry. They're up there in the top five of all companies I've ever done business with. Have the board rebuilt, or gut up and buy it from Hobart. There are no companies selling "Discount Hobart Circuit Boards" out there.

Yup, I gotta disagree with the junk and terrible customer service. They are top notch in the service dept and the machines are far from junk.

OP sounds like the same guy who buys a diesel truck and fills the tank with gasoline.

Then gets upset when the manufacturer won't warranty his mistakes.

Hobart service and support is first rate.

You're more than welcome to drop off "that pile of junk" at my shop if you're so inclined. Heck, I'll even go you one better. Let me know where you are and I'll swing by and pick it up.:)

Hobart and Miller welders (I believe there the same company) customer service is the best I've ever dealt with, and thats not just welding customer service, but any customer service I've dealt with in my life, and I can say they are an A1 company, that id spend my very last dollar on, just because of the way they treated me. Rock on!
