Made this with 3/16 galvanized rod using my 110v welder with 1/16 6013. Stands just under 3 ft. tall. The leaves are approx. 8" long, the short petals are 2.5" and the long petals are 3.75".
The welds REALLY SUCK. Can't get 6013 to cooperate with me for nothing . Oh well, my wife is thrilled with it. Next time I will definitely use my wire welder...

Well, if you plug in that Stickmate, your problems will be solved!

The CH mini-buzz box hardly has enough voltage to burn a 6013. Try 6010. Harder to strike an arc, but it will weld better than XX13 on that mini.

I think your problem might be the galv on the rod. 6013 likes it clean. After welding, recoat the cleaned areas and the welds with either cold galv (spray or brush) or with a hot-galv stick (heat the material and rub the stick over the area)

Hi

Nice looking flower -- I may have to borrow the idea :-)
How did you make the bends?

I also took a peek at your photobucket stuff -- you do good work!

That has been my thought to, but the Stickmate is at my friends house, as well as my wire machine. I'm thinking of picking up some 1/16 7018 to play with.

That could be, as I never did clean it this time first (my bad). I do also have problems with the 1/16 rod, though I can do semi-decent with 7014, and do plan on trying some 7018 soon.

Thank You! You did a great job on the cross as well. The bends were quite easy.. To make the center circle, I used the crank-thingy (at a total loss for the correct term) on my trailer, fastened it with a large pipewrench and bent it around. For the petals, I used an old ice spud, center the petal and bent it around. The leaves, I used the crank-thingy ( :o ) and bent the short side, then kinda free formed it to wrap around to the shape it's at. This was an experiment, the next one will look better. ;)

I like the flower. 6010 and 6011 rods will do a better job on galvanized metal than other rods if you can't grind off the galvanized coating where you are going to weld. 6013 really doesn't do well on galvanize and 7018 isn't too great either.

If you are going to use your wire welder Uniweld makes a fluxcore wire that runs better on galvanized material than any other wire or rod I've ever used.

Galvanized metal can be brazed with O/A without destroying the galvanize. Use a small tip and just enough heat to get the bronze to flow onto the metal. Get it a little too hot and the zinc goes up in smoke.

I see that Hobart makes a 6011 in a 1/16, might try that. I will also check out the Uniweld too, as I have already been "informed" by my wife that I need to make more of these.

My favorite raw material for items like the flowers. Is Rod Gas¼" with the copper coating on it RG45 designation for it. You can get it at most any place that sells welding supplies. It is easy to store, handle, and work.
easy to weld by any type.
Home made bender from a 1" nut and a couple taper roll pins.

By adjusting the space between the holes you can get 6 different dia on one nut.

If you use the gas welding rod you don't have fume issues or most times cleaning or clean up issues prior to painting, finishing and if you braze the joints you can clear coat it of not after the flux is removed.

Use silicon bronze wire with your MIG welder also works.

I had a little 110 stick welder,as far as I know you can't use 6010 because it's dc?I used 6011,6013, and 7014 when I had mine.Like was posted above I have had good luck with flux-core on galvanized.

I like the homemade bender, that is slick!

True, and I also don't think 6010 is available in a 1/16 (I do have the Stickmate that would run the 6010 :D, but that and my wire machine are currently not at my house  )
