I bought a bottle of trimix about three months back to use on my stainless steel boat rails. 90H/7.5A/2.5CO2

I have since purchased a Tig machine and have decided to tig the stainless. I took the unused trimix bottle back to the supplier where I bought it and inquired about exchanging it for C25 for use with my MM210 when welding mild steel.

Even though the trimix bottle has never been used they refused to exchange it and suggested I use it up with my MM210 in place of C25. They said they would have to drain my bottle of the trimix gas even though it had never been used, then do an even exchange for my bottle and charge me for the new C25gas.

My question is that I have searched the net high and low and cannot find any reference to people using trimix for mild steel. Is it useable for mild steel with my mig?

Thanks for the replies..

I can't remember what it does to the weld, which is why I didn't jump right in on this one. Please try it, and report back...I would think with the helium it would go globular, but I'm not sure.

That's pretty standard. I do the same thing when doing air conditioning. Doesn't matter to me what I recover from a system. The customer gets charged for a fresh fill. Never can tell for sure what's in there.

Wow, I must be on an air conditioning kick this morning.

You'll notice that if you use the door chart settings on the 210 for C-25, you'll be a bit too hot. I was able to use tri-mix with mine on MS (and it welds really nice) but had to drop the feed speeds a bit.

Might as well use it. A bit more expensive than C-25, but if that's how the rock falls at your LWS, looks like you be stuck.

Isn't tri-mix what is used when welding mild to stainless anyway?

I use tri mix all the time with stainless wire. It definitely adds heat to the weld. If you use 80/20 with stainless wire the welds are way too cold and do not wet out. Using tri mix with mild steel makes the weld puddle flow a little too much for my taste but it works just fine and you will get used to it.
