Hi,

I am new to this forum, but have enjoyed looking around at all the projects. I hadn't welded since I was 16, a really long time ago. Started again with a cheap flux core welder and the bug bit. I've been really busy building a boat/ladder rack for my pickup, boat dolly, welding table, mig cart, etc. I've attached a couple of pictures. I have a great Miller 140 and may pick up a HH180/187 for larger steel.

Welcome to the forum sarge, this is a wealth of information for all things welding...glad to have you aboard. There is no such thing as a dumb question, so ask anything, or add to the discussion with your own experience...we also have some fun, too. :D

I noticed on your truck rack you have bolted connections, unless I'm mistaken...if so, I strongly recommend you add knee braces to the top side to prevent a collapse.

Rocky,

I made it so I can take it apart. Boat only weights about 100 lbs. I just came back from a 500 mile trip with it and 60 on washboard gravel road, so I think it'll hold. I did take my cordless drill and bolts and gusset material just in case.

If it needs some more bracing, I'll use bolts so I can still take it apart. Nobody to help me take it off in one piece. The front and back are solid section with lateral/horizontal bracing.

Thanks for the reply.

Mike

Wow Mike, looks like you jumped right in with lots of projects right out of the box. Thanks for the boat rack idea as I'd been thinking about doing something similar for couple of kayaks. Nice looking cart also. Been reading lots of stuff here and when one guy shared what he intended on buying to get started he included a cart. One reply said that should be your first project. Immediately took it off my order :D Does the name FormerTankSarge have anything to do with the bike you ride ;) Couldn't resist. From one biker to another ride safe and keep sharing your ideas and projects!
